Square Pegs "The Sophomore Blues Part IV" - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Patty and Johnny entered the Cafe together and took a place in the growing line that lead up to the food service area. In the background Vinnie could be heard making pig sounds as Lauren snuck into the cafe through the backway. A lunch supervisor (aka the driver's ed. teacher) informed Vinnie that if he did not put an end to his pig sounds that tomorrow he could turn in a ten page paper on barnyard animals. Vinne decided that was one paper he did not wish to write and brought an abrupt end to his rare vocal ability.

The lunch line had moved up enough that Patty and the Slashman were standing directly infront of a counter with a pile of cherry Jello squares on a plate. Johnny, slowly and carfully like he were dealing with something rare and breakable, lifted a Jello square up into the palm of his hand then slowly lifted his hand up to his eyes where he glanced and the Jello like it was some strange alien artifact.
"Jello," said Johnny. "Totally different head. Totally"
Johnny offered the cheery square to Patty .
"You want to see, Patty?"
"No thanks, Johnny. I'll take a pass."
A cafe worker with beaver-buck teeth appeared behind the counter and was staring at Johnny with an accusing look on her face.
"I sure hope you are going to pay for that young man," said the cafe worker, as a a spray of spit flew out between the spaces between her large buck teeth. The lady then whipped out a hanky to dry her mouth.
"I've seen you come in here before and play around with the Jello and then just put it back. That is a good way to spread germs, don't you realize that?"
The cafe worker started to make a hacking sound in her throat, pulled out her hanky agian and spit out a mouthful into the rag.
"And if there is one thing I can't stand it is people going around spreading their germs everywhere."
"He was going to pay for it," said Patty.
"He better at that," said the cafe lady. "By the way son, you one of those punk rockers? Yeah, Yeah I think that you are. You probably follow that punk rock band called The Sex Pistols. I saw a picture of them the other day I did. The lead singer, well if you want to call him a singer, I'd say he's a simple screamer, but what ever you choose to call him, the young man had a safty pin through his nose. You realize the germs that are on that safty pin, and then the guy goes in sticks it in his nose. Odds are in five years his nose is going to fall off his face."
"The Sex Pistols are punk," said Johnny. "I'm new wave. Totally, totally different head."
"All right," said the cafe lady,"I'll take your word for it. You kids go eat you lunches. Make sure you wash your hands after your done. Let's at least try not to spread anymore germs around here."
As Johnny and Patty continued on in the line the cafe worker sneezed into her hands and then wiped them on the sides of her pants.

Lauren was seated at a lunch table by herself deep in though when Patty and Johnny Slash sat down with their trays.
"You okay, Lauren," asked Patty.
"I've had better days."

Marshall came walking out of the boy's bathroom holding the Josie Cotten album under his right arm and almost collided with Muffy.
"Sorry about that Muffy."
"Why such a long face Marshall," asked Muffy in her ultra peppy mood. "You know what I always say, turn that frown upside dow...oh, wow you have the new Josie Cotten album! I've been wanting to get that!"
Marshall took the album out from underneith his arm and gave it a long thoughtful look.
"I'll spare you the trouble Muffy. You can have this one. Look, it hasn't even been opened. If Lauren doesn't want my love so be it."
Marshall hands over the album to Muffy and begins to walk away.
"Marshall wait."
"Yeah Muffy."

Lauren, Patty and Johhny were eating their lunches when Marshall sat down with his tray, a big grin on his face.
"You look like you just won the lottery," said Patty, "or somebody actually laughed at one of your jokes."
"Nope, I'm happy because I am looking forward to the Homcoming Dance."
"Marshall," said Lauren, "I told you I wasn't going with you. I'm sorry but..."
"Who said anything about you, Lauren," said Marshall. "I'm going with Muffy."

"Muffy," said Lauren, Patty and Johnny in uter shock.

Marshall's taking Muffy to the Homecoming dance? Un..believeable.

Great job! I loved this one.

I'm not sure if the idea of Marshall taking Muffy to the dance was really a good way to end this story. I just knew that it would have been sort of a cheat if Lauren had changed her mind and decided to take Marshall after all. There was nothing in the series to ever indicate that Marshall and Muffy had feelings for each other, though Marshall sometimes did flirt with Muffy from time to time. I just looked at this story as the first episode of a second season, and if there was 19 stories following it, they could go into the whole Muffy/Marshall thing and maybe it would make more sense.

Oh, well that's understandable. Having him take Muffy to the dance was unexpected and I liked it.
