True fans know the Petries have two wedding anniversaries. If you were a friend or neighbor to Rob and Laura, and one of them told you that both anniversaries were coming up later this year, and then asked you which do you think they should buy a gift for and celebrate, what would you tell him/her?

) The first wedding was the official one. The second one was merely a formality so they would be legally married in all 50 states. Lolac

Hey, I just watched that episode last night! Even in 1962 Burt Mustin was an elderly gentleman!
I agree with Lolac that the first wedding was probably the officially recognized one. |

I love Burt's "He straightened me out" line.
They gotta celebrate that first wedding. One thing that always confused me about that episode were the lines about "only being married in some states" or Rob's about "most states." I don't get the logic of that one. It seems to me if you're married illegally in your original state, you're illegally married in every state. It doesn't matter what the different laws are in that case. I wonder if Rob and Laura were just trying to convince themselves, us, or they were just trying to get around the censor for what was maybe a pretty risque subject for that time? |

yeah, i agree. And didn't they get married at Camp Crowder, which is in Missouri? So it wouldn't matter what the law is in New York, but where they got their license, in Missouri. If their license is valid there it shouldn't matter, right?
But it sure made for a couple of funny episodes, though. From Laura's Little Lie: Buddy: "Hey, congratulations, Rob, I hope it looks like Laura." Sally: "That's not something you hide from your husband." Buddy: "Oh, yeah, babies are good news." |

I'm not sure how that works out either, but I guess I have to agree with most of you that the first anniversary is the one to celebrate. I'll have to admit though, it's purely for sentimental reasons. If the second wedding is the one that validated the union, then it's really the only authentic "wedding" anniversary, right? Steve |

By the time Laura told the truth about her age they were already a common law married couple, weren't they?

One of my favorite moments from the ORIGINAL wedding (except, er...Rob didn't make it on time!). "She came all the way from O-HI-O!" |
