Default Top 5 sitcoms ever

1. Wings (obviously). I just watched a couple of my tapes and the humor in Wings is so smart. The writers of that show were great.
2. Friends. Actually I used to hate friends until my wife turned me onto it. Once again great writing and cast. Really developed the characters.
3. Home Imrovement. Great family sitcom. I don't think we'll see anymore good family sitcoms. Ever show is crime based. I'm a little sick of it.
4. Mad About You. I thought this show was a little underrated.
5. Cosby Show. Enough said on this one.

Of course I'm a little biased growing up with these sitcoms, but reality shows and crime dramas have replaced these types of shows and I don't think we'll ever see this types again.

I think there are way too many reality shows and crime dramas (and dramas in general) on TV too. I really don't care for them. Most of the sitcoms that are on now don't interest me. Anyhoo, my top five sitcoms...

1. The Simpsons- It's hilarious and fun to watch over and over again. While the quality of the show has gone down in past years, it's still a heck of a lot better than the tripe that passes for entertainment these days.

2. Wings- Such a smart, witty sitcom with brilliant writing, lovable characters, and great acting. It truly is an under-rated classic.

3. NewsRadio- Same response as Wings.

4. Scrubs- While I could do without the raunchiness, it's still a brialliant show which is sadly not getting the recognition it deserves. It's far funnier than Will & Grace and Everybody Loves Raymond, IMHO.

5. Taxi- A true classic. 'nuff said.

Sorry, but I've been watching sitcoms since the 1960s, and I cannot come up with just 5. I'll break them down by decade:

1950s:

I Love Lucy -- yes, her antics often make me cringe, but 50 years later it's still absolutely hilarious.

1960s:

1. Get Smart -- it was written by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. 'nuff said.

2. McHale's Navy -- OK, perhaps this is more sentiment than anything else because I used to watch it (and Get Smart) with my father, but I don't remember not laughing at every single episode. It's where I discovered how brilliant Tim Conway is. And "brilliant" is not a word I use lightly.

3. The Monkees -- yes, it started life as a rip-off of "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help," but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this imitation works.

1970s

The Bob Newhart Show -- "Newhart" was funny too, but this is all-round BRILLIANT. Never not funny. Even when the plots are absurd, they work. It's a great ensemble cast, and all the actors have terrific chemistry with one another. Again, another show that is consistenly witty, entertaining and that doesn't need to rely solely on crass, vulgar humor to get cheap laughs.

WKRP in Cincinnati -- not an unfunny episode in the bunch. See Bob Newhart Show.

1980s

Night Court -- see Bob Newhart Show.

1990s

Wings -- see Bob Newhart Show.

"Designing Women" gets an honorable mention. For a while, I just loved it but, towards the end, it got awfully preachy and boring. I also liked "Taxi," but I thought that they tried too hard after a while.

Yes, there is a trend. I don't mind some raciness, but I strongly object to vulgarity for vulgarity's sake. There's also nothing currently on the air that I would even consider making time to watch.

D'oh! I feel so stupid.

How could I have forgotten Barney Miller????? It deserves a place in the sitcom hall of fame. It is outstanding.

And if you’ll let me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to make you feel the same way. (Pause as he gets out the ring.) Monica, will you marry me?

Monica: Yes.
