Post Frasier...

Okay, I have a question...

If Kelsey started the show in the third season, why didn't his name appear in fourth season credits? I mean, they had him in fifth season, but not in fourth. That just seamed really stupid. And they put Woody's name in the fourth season, and Kelsey had been there one year before... that is just confussing!

The reason why Kelsey Grammer wasn't in the the season 4 credits was probably because Frasier wasn't in every episode. I wonder if that was because of Shelley Long's fight with the producers to get him off the show. She thought that having 2 intellectuals in the bar would ruin the show. The producers resisted because, well, every line they gave Kelsey he turned into comic gold. So the producers may have compromised with Shelley by limiting Kelsey's appearances in seasons 3 and 4.

Cool

I noticed that Wings did the same thing with Antonio. He was on the show for half a season or something before he was credited as a series regular. And ER continues to put Dr Chen's name in the opening credtis even though she quit several weeks ago and hasn't been on the show since. I wonder why shows do that.

Kelsey was originally only supposed to guest star in a few episodes during the third season, but he became a recurring character (was on sometimes, but not in every episode) during the third season, and continued to recur during the fourth season. They finally made him full-time during the fifth, when he was added to the opening credits. Bebe Neuwirth also worked her way up from guest star, to recurring character, to full-time.

Unlike Frasier and Lilith, Woody was always meant to be a full-time character, to fill the void left by Coach, which is why he was added to the opening credits for his first episode.

Sometimes producers want to try a character out before committing to that character or actor. As for Deb Chen on "ER", she is supposedly returning, which is why Ming-Na is still in the opening credits.

Man, Freakzilla, I totally forgot about that, that Long wanted Grammar off the show! What a thing to tell your co-star, or have the producers tell you! I heard it somewhere, but had forgotten it. I know the same thing happened with Jay Thomas, when Pearlman wanted him gone, and got her wish. Ouch! Pat on the back to Jay for going to a "Cheers" moderated reunion in some auditorium and screaming to the stage, "Why was I taken off the show?!" You could see Pearlman freak at what she had done (this from the E! Hollywood Story footage). James Burrows barked back "you were too funny" which I guess was true, and Pearlman felt crowded by him. Jay responded with "Screw the all of ya!"

I never liked Jay Thomas on "Cheers" (or any other show, for that matter), so I guess I'd agree with Rhea in this case. Give us Nick Tortelli any day over Eddie LeBec.

It's hard to believe that there were people who thought Nick and Loretta deserved their own show. I don't remember seeing this show (I was only 7 then), but I do remember it was called "The Tortelli's." Just from seeing them on "Cheers", I can tell that show was one of the worst ideas ever.

Yeah, I agree that "The Tortellis" was pretty bad. Anyone could see that they were not meant to be the leads of a series. But Nick and Loretta were great as occasional guests on "Cheers".
