The TV critic for the Chicago Sun-Times just put this special on his list of the worst TV shows of the past year, calling it damaging and pitiful. While I don't think the show itself was that bad, it could have been a whole lot better. The sketches Dick and Mary did on Mary's second variety series were actually more in keeping with the spirit of The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Has anyone heard if there are any plans to put "The Dick Van Dyke Show Revisited" on DVD? I suspect any outtakes and interviews would make it more fun. There was a rumour that because of the strong ratings, there might be another reunion. If they do, they should animate the characters and just use the voices of the cast. Or do a "Walnut" Twilight Zone type of a show to accommodate how much more older the cast is now. Or cast different current TV stars as the Petries in a few sketches. This time, call it The Dick Van Dyke Show Reorganized, or The Dick Van Dyke Show Revitalized. |

At the time of the TDVDS Revisited original release, there was talk of releasing it on DVD, but I don't know if it actually will. The show wasn't that well received and it probably wouldn't sell. I don't know if I'd buy it. I didn't think it was that good.

But I'll bet we'd both buy it if they included a mimi documentary that included interviews, outtakes, and rehearsal footage, right? But alas, the people behind TDVDS and "Revisited" still seem to lack those imaginative marketting qualities that would help to sell their product! Steve |

Why Reiner didn't simply do another "day in the life of Rob and Laurie Petrie" is beyond me. It would have been a great deal of fun to see Laura and Rob forty years later in a daily situation...which was what made the original series so much fun. TDVDSR was so contrived and so forced (and everyone but Dick seems to have forgotten their characters) that it was a wince fest all the way through.
Have to admit I got a kick out of seeing a grown up Ritchie, though! But if they do this again (and I hope they do), PLEASE just put it back the way it was! You know Star Trek made the same type of mistake. Star Trek the Motion Picture was horrible...but they got back to what it was all about with The Wrath of Khan. I hope there's another one...and I hope Reiner has learned his lesson. I also hope Mary goes back and watches every single episode to get Laura back! |
