Default "Home Alone": Chicago or South Bend?

The first time I saw "Home Alone" in the early 1990s I got the impression that it took place in South Bend, Indiana. Last night I caught the end of it and the mother, in France, was about to board a plane to Chicago.

Since "The Windy City" is more populous than Notre Dame's home, I started to believe that "HA" took place there, or at least in the vicinity, instead. (Then again, the mother could have boarded a plane to Chicago and then caught another one to South Bend.)

Trivia: The mansion where the family lived was at 671 Lincoln Way (there's a Lincoln Way in South Bend in real life, as well as south of Chicago following the corridor of US 30). It could be Lincoln Drive or Lincoln Avenue--I forget the exact extension. But I CAN tell you the street is named for "Honest Abe"!

So did "Home Alone" take place in Chicago or South Bend?

It was Chicago. All John Hughes movies take place in Chicago (Like Ferris Bueller and the Vacation movies), because he's from there. Those are the only ones I can think of now.

I think he thinks it was South Bend because Buzz made a
comment about the "South Bend Shovel Slayer" or the old man
played by Roberts Blossom.

Actually, it was the village of Winnetka, Illinois, a Chicago suburb.

I love all three "Home Alone" movies. It took place on either West Bend or Chicago.
