There are certain Christmas songs that are very famous and well-known. However, I found out that some of them are rarely, if ever, sung by choirs or played by radio stations in its entirety. In other words, certain passages of the original song have been left out. A common example is Jingle Bells. I've pasted the entire original lyrics below.
I was surprised when there was actually a verse that was never sung and that is the third verse below, that starts with "A day or two ago, The story I must tell......" and talks about the narrator's run-in with a gentleman who was also sleighing and laughed at him when he fell. Does anyone know of other common Christmas songs that are never played in is entirety? ======Full lyrics of Jingle Bells======== Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh, O'er the fields we go, laughing all the way. Bells on bob-tails ring, making spirits bright, What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight. *CHORUS* Jingle bells, jingle bells, Jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh. A day or two ago I thought I'd take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side The horse was lean and lank Misfortune seemed his lot We ran into a drifted bank And there we got upsot A day or two ago The story I must tell I went out on the snow And on my back I fell A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh He laughed at me as I there lay But quickly drove away Now the ground is white Go it while you're young Take the girls along and sing this sleighing song Just bet a bobtailed bay Two forty as his speed Hitch him to an open sleigh and crack! You'll take the lead |

Few people bother with the opening lyric in "White Christmas" -
The sun is shining, the grass is green, The orange and palm trees sway, There's never been such a day In Beverly Hills, L.A. But it's December the twenty-fourth, And I long to be up north. |

I don't really get out a lot. When I do go out, I couldn't be happier. I love being in a nice milieu. I'm as happy as a clam. Just as long as I'm not in some club playing hip-hop. You hear that sort of thing in a lot of places. That's not my milieu. Rock and roll is good-time music. I love rock. So did my parents. |

I noticed that "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is rarely sung in its entirety. The opening narration is often left out, as is the part that specifies the toy gifts that Santa will bring:
I just came back from a lovely trip Along the Milky Way, I stopped off at the North Pole To spend a holiday; I called on dear old Santa Claus To see what I could see. He took me to his workshop And told his plans to me. So you better watch out, you better not cry, Better not pout, I'm telling you why Santa Claus is comin' to town. He's making a list and checking it twice, Gonna find out who's naughty and nice, Santa Claus is comin' to town. Santa Claus is comin' to town. He sees you when you're sleeping, He knows when you're a awake; He knows if you've been bad or good, So be good, for goodness' sake! Oh, you better watch out, you better not cry, Better not pout, I'm telling you why: Santa Claus is comin' to town. Now, Santa is a busy man, He has no time to play. He's got millions of stocking To fill on Christmas day; You'd better write your letter now, And mail it right away, Because, he's getting ready His reindeer and his sleigh. With little tin horns and little toy drums, Rooty toot-toots and rummy tums, Santa Claus is comin' to town. And curly head dolls that cuddle and coo, Elephants, boats, and kiddy cars, too, Santa Claus is comin' to town. The kids in girl and boyland, Will have a jubilee; They're going to build a Toyland All around the Christmas tree. So you better watch out, you better not cry, Better not pout, I'm telling you why: Santa Claus is comin' to town. |

In "O Holy Night" while the first and third stanzas are often sung, the second stanza is often omitted:
O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till He appeared and the Spirit felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, the night when Christ was born; O night, O holy night, O night divine! O night, O holy night, O night divine! Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. O'er the world a star is sweetly gleaming, Now come the wisemen from out of the Orient land. The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friends. He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Truly He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother, And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, With all our hearts we praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we, His power and glory ever more proclaim! His power and glory ever more proclaim! |
