Did the ratings fall way down or did Redd Foxx say he didnt want to do the show anymore. what was the real reason

Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson both quit the show.

Redd Foxx left to star in a variety show on ABC and I think Demond Wilson left over money.

Yeah, Redd Foxx was offered his own variety show on another network(ABC I believe) for more money. It turned out to be a bad move because the show only lasted a few months. Desmond Wilson wanted a HUGE raise in salary to stay on S & S without Foxx and be its sole star. NBC and Norman Lear politely passed, but tried to resurrect it that season(1977-78) as "The Sanford Arms" with a widower moving into the Sanford home and running the hotel next door. Also there were Aunt Esther, Bubba and Woody, but the show only lasted for about 4 weeks. It really NEEDED SANFORD and SON!!! Oh, well . . .

If i am not mistaken Redd wanted to stay with S&S but wanted NBC to also let him do some varity specials, but NBC i believe had their fill of him and wouldnt let him. ABC hired him away and let him do his varity show eventhough they knew it would bomb, just to get him off NBC because S&S was destroying ABC ratings wise. I am not sure if this is true but it was the success of S&S on NBC and the viewers it took from ABC which let to the primary reason of the cancellation of ABC's "The Brady Bunch".

And Demond Wilson went to star in the sitcom Baby I'm Back in January of 1978 and the show only ran to August of 78.

I honestly thought that the ratings had tanked.

I've heard ABC offered Redd the variety show to get S&S off the air so they would have no competition. even if Demond left I think Redd and the others could have carried they show a couple of more years.
