Default The Skinny On Kirstie's Weight Gain

The Skinny On Kirstie's Weight Gain

UPDATED: 2:38 PM PST December 15, 2004

NBC

Twenty years ago, Kirstie Alley was a TV pinup girl. Women wanted to look like her and men wanted to be wit her.

Then, after a less than successful chance at being a sitcom star, Kirstie went into seclusion and when she emerged bigger than anyone could remember, she quickly became a tabloid target.

Now, Kirstie is using her size for strength as she spoke with "Dateline NBC's" Matt Lauer for an interview that will air on Sunday.

"She is, I have to say, one of the most vibrant and funny people I've ever met," Lauer noted after speaking with Kirstie. "I think you’re going to love the interview."

During the chat, it was clear that anything goes and the outspoken star leaves no stone unturned when it comes to her much-publicized weight gain.

"She takes on this subject head on," Lauer said. "You can ask her any question and she will answer it."

"It's like a kid with candy," she explained to Matt. "Is the kid in the candy store eating all the candy? Yes. But can they do that everyday and isn't that a little irresponsible if that's all you do?"

Kirstie is about to unleash her new, unscripted Showtime series "Fat Actress," which is about, what else, an overweight star looking for work.

Currently weighing in at around 200 pounds, Kirstie told Matt to expect a much thinner Kirstie soon.

"She says she's going to get skinny and she wants to do it by next summer," Lauer explained. "She has a secret method of doing it, but wouldn't share it with me."

"I think I've been in the candy store a little too long," she smiled. "But I'm on my way out."

Catch Matt's complete interview with Kirstie when "Dateline NBC" airs Sunday at 7 p.m.

"Fat Actress" is slated to debut in March on Showtime.

I'm glad Kirstie's taking charge of her weight, if only for her health. She does carry her weight well if dressed in the right clothes. I never would have guessed her weight at 200 pounds. This picture is from People magazine just this past summer.

I watched Star Trek 2 last night on TV when Kirstie made her movie debut-what a babe!!! She was beautiful!!! Hard to believe that she let herself get so over weight. Have only seen scattered Cheers shows with her in them but the one where she first started she looked damn good also.

'Fat Actress' Kirstie Alley Signs With Jennie Craig

NEW YORK (AP) - "Fat Actress" star Kirstie Alley has signed a deal to appear in ads for the Jenny Craig weight-management program.

Alley, who has said she wants to lose the weight that prompted her new Showtime cable television series, will star in Jenny Craig Inc.'s 2005 advertising campaign. The TV commercials will begin airing Jan. 10, the Carlsbad, California-based company announced Monday. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

"I had a great time getting fat and now I'm going to have an even greater time losing weight," Alley, 53, said in a statement. "I had four offers from other companies, but I wanted to go with the ... one that I knew would work - and, let's face it, Jenny Craig's food is hands-down the yummiest."

Alley's goal is to lose more than 50 pounds. She lost more than 15 pounds on the program 14 years ago, the company said, and kept it off for over 10 years.

The commercials will follow Alley's progress. The Emmy-winning actress, who starred in television's "Cheers" and "Veronica's Closet," will also keep a weekly blog on the company's Web site.

Her Showtime series "Fat Actress" premieres in March.

Hm, sounds interesting.

CheersChild, I don't think they're intending to keep "Fat Actress" going for multiple seasons. Maybe two at least...but I don't know about that. Either way, I won't be able to see it. I don't get Showtime

It's great that Kirstie has the motivation needed for losing weight. It's pretty hard to get that motivation going.

What kind of show is this going to be? A reality series like The Osbournes, or a regular TV show like Cheers?
