Red face Obsolete Christmas Songs

Here are some Christmas songs that are so dated, they don't relate to the real world anymore. . . .

"Jingle Bells" - I have yet to ride in a horse-drawn open sleigh, or meet anyone who's done so!

"Sleigh Ride" - Ditto, and I've never attended a birthday (or Christmas, if you go by the Carpenters' version) party at some farmer's house. I'm from Essex County, New Jersey - we only have one farm left, and it's getting crowded out by McMansions!

"Silver Bells" - Unless you live near New York or Boston, no one goes to the city for Christmas anymore; suburban shopping malls have seen to that. Christmas in Philadelphia increasingly means the King of Prussia Court and Plaza, Christmas in Minneapolis means the Mall of America, and Christmas everywhere else usually means Wal-Mart. And while we're at it, do they even cast bells of silver anymore, anyway?

"White Christmas" - Two words, people - global warming.

Any others?

"When You Wish Upon a Star" - something that relates to the star at the top of the christmas tree or the star of Bethlehem.

"Snoopy's Christmas" - Snoopy was a dog based on the "Peanuts" character that might be referred to that.

That isn't even a Christmas song, unless you're NOT talking about "When You Wish Upon A Star" from Pinocchio.

I'm not sure. But I don't think they step out on the Feast of St. Stephen ("Good King Wenceslas") either!

I think that you are right! We will have to ask Peter May if he pops on this thread!

I didn't know that. According to the TV special "A Disney Channel Christmas", towards the end of the special, Jiminy Cricket was saying right before the song it goes like this:

Quote:
Now I like to share my memorable moment. "When You Wish Upon a Star". It symbolizes faith, hope, and all the things that Christmas stands for. So this is my personal wish for you. Something that make Christmas everyday.
Can you get the point. That's was why Jiminy Cricket was saying in that excerpt from a rare TV special from 1958 called "From All of Us to All of You" was included in "A Disney Channel Christmas".

"It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas," because it mentions five-and-ten stores (they went the way of the Studebaker!) and Christmas trees in the town hotel and park (nowadays people stay at a Marriott at the outskirts of town and the town "park" is little more than a muddy football field and some bleachers).

By the way, this song mentions tykes named Barney and Ben and Janice and Jen. We all know about Ben and Jen, but when did Barney and Janice get it together?

Yes, that song is obsolete. I'm sure of this because I happen to know that that reindeer's head is hanging on my brother's wall.

"Christmas At Ground Zero" by Weird Al this song got a whole new meaning after 9/11 and I can't listen to it and enjoy it without feeling bad about listening to it.

Apparently you don't live in midwest. Cause we have White Christmases all the time. We just had about 2 feet of snow dumped on us this week.

Ha ha ha ha ha! Yes, I noitced that. Even southern Texas got snow, and I'm sure northern Mexico even had a Navidad Blanca. But the future of White Christmases still looks as bleak as that of the Kyoto Protocol.
