Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower": Jimi Hendrix's cover is superior. Dave Mason also covered it on his "Certified Live" album, and Neil Young performed it on one of his 1990s live CDs. Neil's version isn't as good as the other two, though.
Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited": Johnny winter's cover is better than Bob's. Remakes: The Police rerecorded their "Don't Stand so Close to Me" for their first "greatest hits" album. It's inferior to the original version. Van Halen remixed "Runnin' With the Devil" for their "Best Of Vol. 1" CD -- two of the vocal sections were switched -- and I hate it. Covers: Tommy James: His versions of "I Think We're Alone Now," "Crimson and Clover," and "Mony Mony" are far superior to the cover versions by, respectively, Tiffany, Joan Jett, and Billy Idol. Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime" was covered back in the mid-1990s by a one-hit wonder hip-hop act, and you're better off listening to the original. Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" was covered in 1997. Again, the original outperforms the cover! In 1997, a hip-hop artist covered The Police's "Every Breathe You Take" as a tribute to Biggie Smalls, complete with new words and a new title ("I'll be Missing You." While not entirely bad, I'd rather hear the original.

Fairport Convention's version of Bob Dylan's "Percy's Song" is better than the original Dylan recroding on Biograph.

You hear that sort of thing in a lot of places. That's not my milieu. Rock and roll is good-time music. I love rock. So did my parents. |
