I heard. Boston is buzzing about it. Management doesn't think he was worth all that money.

I'm sad to see Pedro go. It was always such a great feeling having him on the mound. It has been a steady decline over the last couple of years with his injuries.

I think Boston got his best years. I wish him the best. He did say that New York was his daddy, lol.

I talked to a few die hard Boston fans tonight, and they were more than happy to see Pedro go.

He's only in it for the money.
That's a shame. There used to be such a thing as loyalty, but that doesn't exist anymore in professional sports.

The more I learn about Pedro's departure, I'm glad to see him go as well. Now he's trash talking the Sox management and his fellow players.

I think players should exit a ballclub with style and class.

One day after former ace Pedro Martinez [stats, news] opened up on all things Red Sox [stats, schedule], new ace Curt Schilling [stats, news] was mystified by the bitterness directed at both the the club and himself.

Speaking on conference call arranged by his publicist, Schilling said yesterday that he felt New York reporters misrepresented his words to bait Martinez. Beyond that, Schilling said he was ``disappointed'' as to why Martinez would ``call me out.''

``I never said he got preferential treatment. Pedro did his own thing and that's how (the Red Sox) handled him,'' Schilling said. ``The vaunted New York media did it's due diligence. They made a story out of nothing.

``For some reason, Petey felt a need to call me out. I'm not sure, beyond the initial comment, why.''

In an exclusive interview with the Herald's Michael Silverman, Martinez said Wednesday that he resented it when Sox officials entered his negotiations drawing comparisons to Schilling, whom the club last offseason signed to a two-year contract extension worth $25.5 million. When the Red Sox won the World Series, the value of that contract ballooned to $40.5 million over three years, precisely the final offer the Sox made to Martinez before he elected to sign with the New York Mets.

During his press conference Wednesday, Martinez was asked to respond to Schilling's assertions that Martinez received ``preferential treatment.'' And while the question drew a sharp response from the pitcher, Martinez later said, ``I'm way over Schilling as a pitcher'' and defended criticisms of his workout program by saying, ``Schilling cannot run with me.''

Schilling acknowledged that playing with Martinez, who was very much on his own program, required an adjustment on his part and that of teammates.

``He came and went as he pleased. That was something very different for me and something I'd never seen before,'' Schilling said. ``I had to be kind of walked along by the hand with how I dealt with that because I wasn't sure how I was supposed to. There were times during the year when I wondered where he was.

``He left the game the first start of the season in the middle of the game,'' continued Schilling, referring to Martinez' departure on Opening Day in Baltimore. ``What does that say about the respect he has for his teammates? He wasn't there for Game 6 of (the American League Championship Series). I don't remember what his explanation was.''

According to Sox officials and Martinez, the pitcher missed Game 6 in New York so that he could remain in Boston and prepare for the possibility of pitching out of the bullpen in Game 7. Nonetheless, the decision was somewhat odd given the magnitude of the series.

Regarding the presence of his name in the Martinez contract negotiations, Schilling said that he acted in deference to the longtime Sox star and can't understand the animosity over who was the staff ace.

``It's obvious: The barometer he uses for respect is money,'' said Schilling, who earned a base salary of $12 million last season to Martinez' $17.5 million. ``It obviously bothered him because, question after question, his answers were that he wouldn't be behind me or be under, whatever that means. I'm guessing it relates to salary.''

Addressing other topics, Schilling said that he was ``similarly disappointed'' in the dismissal of team doctor Bill Morgan, whom he credited for getting him to the mound during the World Series. His focus was on the Martinez flap, however.

Schilling said he had no plans to contact Martinez in an attempt to smooth over the matter.

``I imagine, like most guys in the game, he and I will never see each other again. There aren't a lot of guys in baseball you end up being close friends with. You could probably count them on one hand,'' Schilling said.

``It's weird because Petey and I got along - every day. Nobody wanted him to succeed more than me.''

Apparently, the feeling was not mutual.

I just hope that Pedro remembers that when Piazza is behind the plate, he should aim for his glove, not his head.

I never liked Pedro, for all the obvious reasons. He is a prima donna that wants to be coddled and constantly told that people love him. Sound familiar?

I would have liked to see Pedro stay, but I would not give him a four year deal, last year his velocity dropped off a lot, and so you don't know how hes going to hold up in the next few years. Since he is in the NL his ERA might be down but in the long run I dont know how effective he will be
