Default The Matthew McConaughey Episode

Does anyone remember the Matthew McConaughey episode?

McConaughey portrays this teenager who gets shot by a pedophile. In case you forgot the story, here is a quick summary.

A women is in her house doing chores when, through her kitchen window, she sees a fat hillbilly type (I believe his name was Eugene Bell) pull up in a red truck. She doesnt recognize the guy but she does notice 2 things about him.... 1) he is walking toward a group of kids playing in the street and 2) he is not wearing PANTS!!

Her son (played by McConaughey) is in the family garage, and he too notices the pervert. McConaughey decides he is going to stop the guy from leaving, and proceeds to take his car keys. This makes the perv upset and he begins screaming for his keys back. McConaughey refuses to give them over so the perv retrieves a gun from his truck and shoots McConaughey several times.

Eventually the police show up and arrest the pervert but the son, full of bullets, dies. The pervert, out on bail, leaves the country and hence the unsolved mystery. (Years later, according to an update, the guy is located and thrown in jail)

That's what it says in the end credits. The name of the murder victim he played was Larry Dickens.

This segment always has a big emotional effect on me every time I see it. The woman who played the victim's mother was really good at conveying the sense of horror and helplessness she felt as she watched her son being shot. Then they interview the real mother and sister and can see how devastating it was for them. I'm so glad they caught the guy who did it.

Where can I buy the episode of Unsolved Mysteries with Matthew McConaughey in it? It would make a great Christmas gift.

Best Buy, Amazon, any place that sells DVDs. It's the UM's 'Bizarre Murders' box set and the title of the segment is 'Texas Most Wanted'.

Question

Wait that was Matthew McConaughey who played the re-actment of the murder?

That's what it says in the episode's end credits. Google his name along with "Unsolved Mysteries", and you get a lot of hits.

Yeah although I'm not exactly a fan of his work, I can tell you 100% it is him portraying Larry Dickens. John Cosgrove I believe mentions in the commentary for that segment that he was a local actor (as most of the actors on UM were) who showed up for a casting call and got the part in that segment.

I also remember from the commentary that John Cosgrove mentioned that later on MM approached him to cover a case he suggested. Apparently one of his mothers friends went missing and approached the show to do a segment on it. I don't remeber if she was ever found...

How could you miss the well tanned, washboard abs of Matthew McConaughey?

The Edward Harold Bell segment is easily the most disturbing piece UM ever did. I still get chills thinking about watching it for the first time that night.

I'll agree with that. As if Larry getting shot with a handgun wasn't enough, then Bell goes and gets a rifle and shoots him with that. Sheesh.
