Bronx Man Gets 40 Years in Egg Shooting

NEW YORK - A Bronx man who shot two 16-year-old boys for throwing an egg at him, killing one and leaving the other permanently injured, was sentenced Tuesday to at least 40 years in prison, prosecutors said.

Shawn Green, 23, was convicted in October of murder and attempted murder for the February 10, 2002, shooting that killed Darryl Jawan Hayes and critically injured Duwayne Cousins, said Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson.

The incident began that day when Hayes and Cousins threw an egg out of a window hitting Green as he was walking to work at a nearby Burger King, Johnson said.

Green waited for the teens to come out of the building. When they came downstairs, Green confronted them and a fist fight, which Green lost, broke out, Johnson said.

Furious that he had lost the fight, Green went home and got a gun and borrowed his mother's car. He then drove to a local bodega where the teens often hung out, and shot Hayes three times and Cousins once. The shooting was caught on the store's surveillance camera, Johnson said.

Hayes died shortly after being taken to a hospital. Cousins right lung was permanently injured, Johnson said.

Green, who had previous felony convictions, was sentenced by State Supreme Court Justice Megan Tallmer to consecutive terms of 25-years-to-life in prison for murder and 15-years-to-life for attempted murder. He would have to serve a minimum of 40 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole, Johnson said.

How you figure he deserves 40 years for shootin those dudes for throwing eggs at him? They shouldn't have thrown eggs at him. The justice system is so sh**ty. I heard about this black man in Maryland who had his truck stolen by some black teenagers so he killed them & he ended up going to prison for it when all he was doing was protecting his vehicle. If you're gonna steal from somebody, get prepared to die cause if the person who catches you who owns whatever you stole from him or her, that's what's gonna happen.

No, they shouldn't have been throwing eggs, but that 1 guy didn't deserve to die because of it.

Well like i said when you mess with somebody, be prepared to die cause that's the real world. Nobody cares that the boy didn't deserve to die but he should've known better that he shouldn't have did what he did.

Exactly.

There's some crazy people in this world. You throw eggs at one there's no telling what they will do. I can't feel sorry for those teens one bit.

Yeah and somebody bumped into me in the crowded hall today, maye I should've slammed their head into a locker until they bled...

Throwing an egg out a window at somebody sounds like something my friends would do (well not an egg, maybe something less messy.)

What the hell does throwing eggs have to do with stealing?

A lot of people would be dead around me if i killed everyone that pissed me off. That's no way to go about one's life.
