Default Sanford (1980)

Just received 2 tapes in the mail from TVShow Analyzer of the Sanford and Son spinoff "Sanford" from 1980. In it, Fred is running the junkyard with an overweight white guy named Cal. Also there is his nephew. This is a GREAT show! I was really surprised that I almost like SANFORD better than Sanford and Son. Fred has mellowed out a bit and his banter with new partner Cal is hilarious. The show is also more meaningful and heartfelt than S&S(especially in S&S's later years). In one episode, Fred REALLY does have the BIG one and has to rely on Cal to take care of him. You can tell that deep down they are really good friends and can depend on each other. That doesn't stop Fred from insulting Cal, especially regarding his WEIGHT.

CAL: I'll just go out through the kitchen.

FRED: Yeah, why don't you go in there and molest the refrigerator!!!
This show should have lasted longer than 1 season!!!

Sounds hilarious, I wish I could catch a couple of episodes of this spin-off, it sounds to me that they toned down Fred Sanford and made him more human....

Cool

Yeah, his character has GROWN and evolved, but it's STILL the Fred Sanford we know and love. He also still loves The Inkspots and sings- 'If I didn't care . . . " You know the drill. There was even a guest appearance from the two cops Smitty and Hoppy. Great show!

I loved it when Fred always broke down and started to sing that song from the Ink Spots, definitely when Redd Foxx was at his best...

I don't know if you watched this episode yet, but it was a scene with Fred and Cal playing Checkers and Fred was losing so he just threw the checker board in the air and Cal said-When are you going to grow up? And Then Fred said-"if i grew up there wouldn't be enough room in here for the both of us-LOL

No, I haven't got that far yet. Sounds hilarious. I really liked the episode with the crooks coming back to get their stolen coins and Fred and Cal have to hide in the closet.

FRED: I can't breathe, fool! Suck your stomach in!!!

CAL: It IS sucked in.

FRED(Terrified) : Then WHATEVER you do, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T let it out!!!!

I can't wait to watch the remaining episodes on the other tape. Any idea why this show only lasted 1 season? It seemed like it could have went on a lot longer. Good characters and situations. Didn't seem like a failure at all to me. Wish they would have given it more of a chance.

The show started as a midseason replacement in 1980 and was good enough to be added to the fall schedule of the 1980-81 season. But when the 80-81 season started, Sanford could not compete with Soap on ABC.

While not as good as the original I did find this show very enjoyable and wish it could have lasted longer.Redd Foxx was a comic genius.

I'm fortunate enough to have taped all 26 episdoes when the show aired on BET 10 years ago & I've always said that this show was just as good as Sanford and Son at certain times during its run - it was better than the entire 6th season of Sanford & Son lol I think Solomon & myself are the only people on this board who have this series on tape & really know how funny this show was. I'm glad to see others here finally getting to see this show courtesy of Solomon. IMO, they should put this series on one DVD set as a continuation of Sanford & Son. It's basically the same show - just minus Lamont. Rollo, Aunt Esther, Grady, Smitty & Hoppy all made appearances on here & Cal more than held his own. One of my favorite quotes was in the episode where Fred & Evelyn go to a fancy restaurant & Evelyn comes back from the restroom & says she's gonna go powder her nose again & Fred says:

Fred: You got enough powder on your nose now to make biscuits LOL

I remember watching that show when it was originally on the air. I don't think I have seen it since then. From what I remember, it was pretty good. Fred Sanford is just a good character to begin with so that provides a pretty good foundation for a show to start out with. I can't remember since it's been so long since I've seen any of these episodes but was Aunt Ester on any of the "Sanford" episodes???????? I can't remember.

Signed,
Respectfully,
Dutch

Aunt Esther appeared on 3 episodes. Her son Cliff was on several episodes because he moved in with Fred.

I remember you from the last time we talked about "Sanford" jekouptown. You kinda got mad at me because I said I liked "Sanford" as much as I do "Sanford and Son." I could tell you were not a big fan of "Sanford" lol You seemed to think that Lamont's absence made the show no good or you just didn't like Cal - at least that's what I got out of it. I've been meaning to tell you though that your avatar rocks, because the Knicks are MY TEAM!
