Ho, ho, ho, Merry Christmas
a little more than a month early! ![]() Here in Dayton, Ohio, WLQT "Lite 99.9" started wall-to-wall Christmas music at noon Saturday, November 20. (Normally WLQT starts on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.) Then I heard that in Columbus, Ohio, one station started around November 7, but what really blew my mind is that one Cincinnati radio station started Monday, November 1! When did stations in other areas start playing wall-to-wall Christmas music? |

Here in Orlando, the day before Thanksgiving. Last year, I was in Charlotte, NC on Nov.1st and there was a station that was already playing Christmas music.
My dad had a good thought. He said that radio stations shouldn't start playing Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. There's basically 4 weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The first week, the programming should be 25% Christmas music, the second week, 50%, and so on, and don't play wall-to-wall until the week before Christmas. Now I love Christmas music but these radio stations have limited programming and you end up hearing alot of the same music. There is so much great Christmas music out there and the radio stations don't play it!! |

In the New York City listening area, WLTW and WPLJ are still playing Christmas music. Other stations in the Hudson Valley has even more Christmas stations like WRNQ, and WHUD are still playing Christmas music too. I remember last year that WNEW-FM in New York changed to a Christmas station early back on November 13th and WBPM (Cool 94.3 before Cool 92.9) flipped to a Christmas station for a weekend back in October of last year as "Christmas 94.3" before it flipped to a country station as "Kick 94.3" and the call letters changed to WKXP. That's strange.

Two days after Thanksgiving, on my birthday, I noticed that one of my friends had KCMS, "Spirit 105 FM" in Seattle, the Christian music station, announce themselves as "Your Christmas Music Station!!" Then all the programing was entirely smoooooth jazz/whatever versions of Christmas songs. Remind me not to listen to that station for the rest of this month. Kinda weird to have that station in the middle of Grungetown, USA.

I heard the carols playing at the mall on November 1st when I was shopping for a new dress. Plus it was decorated in lights and wreaths, and there were a bunch of kids waiting in line for Santa! I thought I slept through November or something. A week later at the grocery store and TJMaxx, I heard Silent Night playing on the speakers. Some radio stations started playing nonstop carols a week before Thanksgiving. I changed the stations, but it was so annoying to hear carols at the stores before Thanksgiving. I felt like screaming, "Turn that **** off!" What a way to get shoppers to spend their money.
