Last night, I was looking foward to watching All in the Family on TVLand and it turned out to be a Best of All in the Family episode hosted by Henry Fonda. I hate clip shows, I'd much rather watch an actual episode. It also seemed that there was a studio audience for this show. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd feel rooked if I got tickets to a "Best of" show. I feel that is just pure laziness on the part of the writers.

Absolutely. It's one of the things that bugs me the most about Friends - their damn clip shows.

I like them only if they show never-before-seen stuff/bloopers. If it's just clips that have already aired then it sucks.

I think we are talking about two somewhat different things here. In my experience, a clip show has a plot, usually a weak one, but uses clips from previous episodes, either as flashbacks, memories or something along those lines, to fill most of the time. Examples of a clip show would be the several Friends episodes that had clips, the horrible Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Shades of Grey" and the two (or is it three?) aptly named Malcolm in the Middle clip shows.
A "Best of..." episode is usually a retrospective that has clips from various episodes but without any plot whatsoever. I am not fond of either, to be honest. Clip shows just make me feel cheated out of watching a show and "Best of..." episodes are hardly ever worth watching. |

The Friends clip shows were horrible. Some of them, like the Ross & Rachel and Monica & Chandler ones, were appropriate for the story, but others just seemed like filler.
Apparently, the clip shows were an NBC decision. They thought the show was becoming too inside joke-y and non-accessible for new viewers, so they demanded the producers do a clip show every year starting with season 6. The writers and such really fought against it, but NBC ended up winning. |

I totally agree, Brian Damage. To me clip shows are like an excuse for the producers and/or actors to make an episode without moving a muscle.
One exception was the 37th episode, "St. Valentine's Day Massacre", of The Wonder Years. There was a clip segment of Kevin reflecting on his favorite moments with Winnie, but it consisted of only a minute or two of the episode. "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted" by Jimmy Ruffin played in the background, which gave it a sense of originality. |

I hated when Family Ties did their clip shows. I always changed the channel when those episodes were on.

The only episodes of Seinfeld I don't completely enjoy watching are the clip shows.

I have to agree about the dislike of clip shows. If I recall correctly, one series that I like in particular, Golden Girls, had quite a few clip episodes.

Yeah, well you and some other people including Safety Pin, probably hate a lot of things but you don't have to air your views on this message board. |
