Toddler Falls Head-First Into Vat Of Hot Soup
Girl Remains In Critical Condition

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. -- A Pacoima toddler who was severely burned when she fell head-first into a vat of soup at her family's home remains in critical condition and will undergo more surgery Friday, according to a hospital official.

The 18-month-old girl underwent her first surgical procedure Tuesday at the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital, said hospital spokeswoman Lysa Barry.

Another surgical procedure was scheduled for an unspecified time Friday. Details of the surgeries were not being released, Barry said.

The toddler sustained first- and second-degree burns from her head to her waist in the accident at the family's home in the 10300 block of Rincon Avenue last Saturday evening.

Fire officials said the girl's mother took a five-gallon vat off the stove and the toddler somehow fell into it head-first. The accident happened during her brother's fifth birthday party.

The girl, who sustained burns over 45 percent of her body, remains in intensive care for post-operative burn treatment, Barry said.
