'Mrs. Doubtfire' sequel in the works
Friday, November 19, 2004 Posted: 3:15 PM EST (2015 GMT) LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Mrs. Doubtfire isn't finished yet. Eleven years after the Robin Williams drag comedy appeared on the big screen, a sequel to the hit film is in the works at Fox. Williams is in early talks to reprise his role as Mrs. Doubtfire, and to resume producing duties with his wife, Marsha Williams. Bonnie Hunt also is in talks to pen the project. In the original, directed by Chris Columbus, Williams played an estranged father who poses as a Scottish nanny, Euphegenia Doubtfire, in order to get access to his children and successfully bypass his ex-wife (Sally Field). The film grossed $219 million domestically. The film garnered two Golden Globes in 1994, one for best picture (comedy/musical) and one for Williams as best actor in a comedy/musical. The film also won an Oscar for best makeup for Williams' elaborate transformation into a frumpy, bespectacled older woman. Williams' recent credits include David Duchovny's "House of D" and Christopher Nolan's "Insomnia." The Oscar-winning actor has just been announced to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes on January 16.

It wouldn't work. The kids are way too grown up now.

The first is one of my favorite films of all time (I've never met anyone who doesn't like it).... but I doubt this will be any good.

It's true. There are no new ideas in Hollywood. They have to make a sequel out of everything
![]() Don't worry, I'm sure they'll have "Sound of Music 2" and "Doctor Zhivago 2" come out soon. |

What's he gonna do? Babysit his 20 year-old kids?
![]() Who knows, it might be decent. I liked the first. |

Yeah, right. "Kids, your father's coming over to look after you while I'm gone." "But, we're too old for a babysitter." I predict that the film will be a flop. But, that's just my opinion. |

This sounds like one of the most pointless sequels ever. I didn't think Robin Williams would even consider (and if he does pass on it, they'll just redo the original- with a different guy- sort of like Dirty Dancing 2). First, why would the character need to dress up to fool his family again? They already know he did it before- and he's on good terms with his kids. As for his grandkids, the only reason for doing that would be if he fell out with his kids, and even then he'd have to dress as a completely different woman.
It'll probably be a typical cookie cutter sequel. something stupid like Mrs Doubtfire recruited by the CIA or he meets a woman that looks exactly like Doubtfire and the whole 'Prince and the Pauper' thing happens. I've seen so many sequels like that- and a few sequels with the same story as 'Santa Klaus 2'- where he has to get married or else. I think what would be funnier is getting Sally Field dressing as a man for some reason (possibly to get a great job but the boss is sexist, or something else, I dunno). Sally Field as a man would be hilarious. |
