Default Square Pegs "The Sophomore Blues Part Three"

Marshall slipped the new Devo record out of it's sleeve and placed it on the turn table. He and Johnny were at the Weemawee radio station, which Marshall ran. Marshall moved the niddle over to the record and let it drop down onto a grove and within seconds the "New Wave band of the century", as Muffy ofter referred to Devo as, went into a live version of their cover of The Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction".
"I'm telling you Slash man that this is the year that I am going to get together with Lauren," said Marshall. "I 'm going to help Lauren come to understand her feelings for me."
"And what might those feelings be, Marshall?"
"It's simple, Lauren is in love with me. Oh, yeah, she'll say other wise, but she is just in denial. What I have to do is come up with some way to make her face the feelings that she has for me."
"You are not going to use that love detector device agian, are you Marshall?"
"No, it will be much more simple then that. I am going to ask Lauren to the dance. I can see it in my mind Johnny, Lauren and I dancing under the fluorescent lights, a little slow dancing. It will be magical. And in that magical moment, Lauren will come to understand her feelings for me."
"Uh, Marshall, have you asked Lauren to the dance?"
"No, not yet. Why?"
"Well, I'm thinking that what if you ask Lauren to the dance, and she says no?"
"I'm way a head of you Johnny. Yesterday when we went to the mall and you were trying on those high heel shoes..."
"That was a totally different head. Totally. To be able to see the world from three incehes higher. It totally made me understand the whole female sex better."
"Must have been a revelation. Anyhow, when you were coming to understand the female sex better I went into Record City and picked up the new Josie Cotton album. You know how Lauren has been talking for weeks about how she wants it. So, today at lunch I am going to present Lauren with my little gift to her, and at the sametime, I'll ask her to the dance. She'll be compelled to go with me. Me getting her a nice gift, and one she really wanted for that matter."

Lauren and Patty were walking down the hallway towards the Weemawee cafe when Marshall appeard out of nowhere holding Lauren's wrapped gift out in front of him.
"Marshall, where did you come from? It's like you popped out of thin air," said Lauren
"Lauren, there has been something that I wanted to ask you, but first I wanted to give you this gift."
"Gift? Marshall, why did you buy me a gift? It's not my birthday or Christmas."
"Why does a friend need a reason to buy another friend a gift? Besides, if you want a reason, I wanted to thank you for being such a good friend."
"Oh, well thanks."
"Well, go ahead, unwrap it."
Lauren tore the paper wrapping off the the album cover and when she saw the album cover, a smile appeared across the side of her face.
"The new Josie Cotton album! Thanks Marshall!"
"I know how much you wanted it. Now, Lauren, would you be interested in going to the dance with me?"
Lauren and Patty exchanged a look.
"You, know what," said Patty,"I'll meet the two of you in the cafe. I'll go see what Johnny's up to. He's probably amusing himself with the Jello molds again."
As Patty walked away, Lauren took a deep sigh.
"Marshall, did you really buy me this album as a thank you gift, or were you trying to get me to go to the dance with you?"
"All right, I was trying to get you to go to the dance with me. You can't blame a guy for trying, can you?"
"I can't take the album then"
"Why? I thought you wanted it?"
"I do. But you're trying to buy my affections, and you can't do that Marshall. You are not being fair to either me nor yourself. I like you as a friend Marshall, nothing less, but nothing more. You have to stop trying to win over my affections. You have to stop trying to force me to feel about you in a different way then I do."
"Can't you just give me a chance, Lauren," said Marshall, near to defeat. "I can't stop thinking about you. It is driving me crazy. I can't take it anymore. There is this knot in my stomach all the time now. I feel like I have this hunger that woun't go away. I think about you day and night, Lauren. Please, just give me a chance?"
"I can't Marshall, I'm sorry. I can't because I just don't have those sort of feelings for you. I'm sorry."
Lauren hands the Josie Cotton album to Marshall and walks away.

To be concluded in part four...

Lauren's right, but I still feel for Marshall. I'll be sticking around to see what happens next.

The love detector, the jello molds, " "That was a totally different head. Totally. To be able to see the world from three incehes higher. It totally made me understand the whole female sex better." <--
