Question Is giving your kid hot sauce as a punishment abuse?

There was just a mother on the news who has 2 boys ages 5 and 8. She says that when they are naughty she gives them tobasco sauce. I personally don't like that, but I'm not sure how it would affect them or if it works. A Dr. on the news segment says it's a form of "Borderline Abuse". So, what do you think?

Of course it's abuse. That's a horrible thing to do to your kid.

Frankly that's the most assinine form of punishment I've ever heard of. Hot sauce as a punishment? I don't think it's abuse but I still think that mother has some issues.

Don't back-talk kids, or I'll break out the pepper!

I personally don't think it's abuse. I see it as an effective and clever punishment. Actress, Lisa Whelchel uses this method, too, with her kids. I speak from experience, of course. When I was younger, my parents soaked my thumb in tobasco sauce, and I never sucked my thumb ever since then. They've helped me break a long, hard habit in just a few minute's worth time. Big props.

Well... Lisa Whelchel is a borderline psycho when it comes to parenting her kids. The woman is nuts.

As for your situation, I don't think that's punishment, Jenny. Your parents wanted to break you of a habit that could cause future teeth problems, and if that's the only way to get you to do it, well so be it.

As for a punishment, I believe it's a comlpetely asinine thing to do. There's something called 'time-out'. There's something called 'no desert for a week'. There are many, many other alternatives to literally smoking your young one's tongue off.

Personally, I think it's warped, twisted abuse.

Tobasco sauce, taken alone, can take anyone's breath away, especially in the tiny throats of children. It most certainly is child abuse.

I used to suck my thumb when I was little and the dentist told my parents it was a bad habit I needed to break (I saw this later on...) and so they would put tobasco on my thumb when I went to sleep.

Question

My daughter loves eating hot sauce and she's 7 years old. One day I passed by the table and looked at her plate she had emptied alot of it on her food. Then she looks up at me and said.... "Mom it's too hot" I said... "that's what you get for pouring it yourself"........ since that day I sprinkle a little bit in her food.
