Brady Manners - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I realized in the Brady episodes the kids all , especially Greg answer their dad as Sir.
They use Ma'am & Sir manners. That is kind of lame. Do any teenage boys answer their dad as Sir in the year 2001? I think that is unreality right there. Anyone agree?
Does anyone answer your parents as Ma'am & Sir today?

You have to realize something about that Sir and Ma'am thing. I too thought it was just a bit too much when the kids on shows like Brady Bunch and Leave It To Beaver would address their parents with Sir and Ma'am. Watching an episode of the Brady Bunch once as a kid with my folks, I remember saying how fake I thought it sounded, but parents told me, at one time, kids did indeed answer their folks with those words, and if they didn't, there would be hell to pay! It was just the way kids were brought up then, a sign of respect that has slowly been washed away over the years. Maybe by the time of the Brady Bunch, the practice was about gone, but remember, TV, especially back then was the idealization of family life. So of course, looking at it from the perspective of our times, it seems unrealistic, but then again, it's pretty sad that good basic manners has become something we think of as "UN-REALITY."

I was just wondering how old you are? Also do you find it hard to say Sir & Ma'am to everyone or just your parents?

I also noticed on a episode of Leave it to Beaver they call their dad Sir. I still don't know of anyone now a days that answers their parents as Ma'am & Sir.

I call my parents Mom and Dad, but I call non-relatives Sir and Ma'am every once in a while (if not their actual name), just to try to keep the practice alive--and show some respect.

Did you forget that the brady bunch wasn't filmed in 2001? No, we usually don't call adults sir and madame anymore, but this was like 25 years ago that they did this. Not really unreality...

This is an unknown secret of the Brady Bunch but the Brady Kids were under penalty of death if they dissed the Brady Grown Ups, especially Alice

You see if you got any dirt on the patio, Alice would kill you as explained on Nik at Nite.

Now however there was a bit of CheeseWiz in the way the kids acted, what with their cheerful smiley faces as they were being grounded or asked to do Brady Chores, recite the Brady Mantras like Love Cousin Oliver, etc and especially humiliate themselves taking their kid brother (and his frogs) on dates. But this was Great Tellie Vision!

I was at Target the other day when some little boy about 6 or 7 came to his mom with something. She said, "Is that the one you want?" He replied, "Yes Ma'am". I was really surprised. I guess some kids are still taught good manners in 2001.

When I was a boy, I couldn't get the words "Ma'am" and "Sir" to come out of my mouth . At the time, I did think it was lame when kids on TV said "Yes, Ma'am" and "Yes, Sir", but I decided that TV children had to be all gooey -- gooey nice . If I had children, they'd be required to say "Ma'am" and "Sir" . A woman I know doesn't like being called "Ma'am" . I told her "If I had children, they'd get in trouble with you for calling you 'Ma'am', and they'd get in trouble with me for NOT calling you 'Ma'am' !" . There was one episode of Reba where Reba's son, Jake ( Mitch Holleman ) got into trouble, Reba was talking the situation over with him, and he said "Yes, Ma'am !" . I thought it was cute that he got into serious trouble and was trying to smooth it over with his good manners .

Respect has gone bye bye in many areas as time has marched on. I have come across personally that down in some southern areas of the country, Sir and Ma'am are still being used to address parents, teachers, authority figures etc.

As another example:
I noticed in vintage TV and even up into the 70'S, Sir and Ma'am were also used in the workplace to address the person that you reported to.

I was a young kid in the 70"s and I never called my parents sir or ma'am.

The Brady Bunch was an idealized family, but the cast members sure were genuine and came across very natural. Sherwood had an excellent eye when he cast the kids/adults.

There may have been some kids who called their parent M'am and Sir in the 1970s, but that was not the usual practice. I should know, I was born in 1963.
