I just came back from New York and saw Ralph Carter on an off off broadway play called "Ain't Supposed To Die A Natural Death" and he was brilliant. If you are in the Harlem area (it's playing at the Harlem Theatre on St. Nicholas and 141street until Nov.21st) you should go see it. It's a remake of Melvin Van Peebles 1971 playwrite. The great news is that Ralph is doing great and I can see he is well loved by everyone around him. He plays the wino in this comedy/drama/musical and when he sings you can here how well seasoned he is.
In my opinion, especially concerning the singing that went on, he was the best...then again he was at this since he was nine years old.

It's a show about the urban community. There are pimps, whores, a wino and drug addict...it basically is a drama about the african american street life but definately has a lot of comedy to it. You can buy tickets at smartix for $19.00 and the play is at the Classical Theatre of Harlem.

here's the website. Actually it says the tickets are $25 but they might still sell them for $19.

Maybe someone should give them the idea to film it and show it on the Ovation channel. Just a thought.

Unfortunately, Ralph Carter is no longer in the play. He stopped a few weeks ago when his run was up.

yes, that's right. apparently i caught him in his last performance which was supposed to be the last day of the play. I went back and he was replaced. But he has been nominated for an Audelco award for his outstanding performance in 'Great Men Of Gospel' and the winner will be announced today at a ceremony in harlem(135th street) I pray he gets it.

me, too. I was so disappointed when I looked through the playbill and saw the wino was being played by someone else. maybe he had prior engagements because the rest of the original cast was still there.
