Can anyone help me? I friend asked me:
On the Dick Van Dyke Show, there was a song that Rose Marie sang that goes something along the lines of "If you want to know what I'm aksing in return dear/You'll be glad to know that my demands are small/All I ask is that you care/And that you'll always be near/That's all, That's all..." Do you have ANY idea what song that is? Bob |

Doesn't sound familiar. Are you sure it's from the Dick Van Dyke Show? Lolac

The only song I can think of that's even close is in the Season 1 episode "The Sleeping Brother". I think the name of the song is "Crying Out My Heart for You". There are no song credits at the end of the episode so I'm not 100% sure of the title, though. The lyrics aren't really that close to what you wrote, but all other songs that Sally sings in the series (besides "I Wish I Could Sing like Durante" and "Santa Send a Fella") are well known standards.

Musicfan2112,
I'm about to pop a vessel trying to recall the specific ep you're referring to, so before I do, let me pass what I do know on to you! It's a hauntingly beautiful song called, "That's All," a big hit in 1960. I don't know the writer's name. It was sung by many artists. It was in the movie, "The Wedding Singer," but I don't believe it made the soundtrack CD. It is currently available in a breathtaking rendition by Michael Bublé. To hear a sample click here, "That's All." The full lyrics are below. I hope this helps. Steve I can only give you love that lasts forever, And a promise to be near each time you call. And the only heart I own For you and you alone That's all, That's all... I can only give you country walks in springtime And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall; And a love whose burning light Will warm the winter's night That's all, That's all. There are those I am sure who have told you, They would give you the world for a toy. All I have are these arms to enfold you, And a love even time can't destroy. If you're wondering what I'm asking in return, dear, You'll be glad to know that my demands are small. Say it's me that you'll adore, For now and evermore That's all, That's all. |

Musicfan2112, you are talking to a group of die-hard TDVDS fans here and none of us recall Sally singing that song. Might I offer the opinion that perhaps in the clip in "The Wedding Singer," the scene which shows Rose Marie may have been from here stint on The Doris Day Show. Perhaps it wasn't a clip from TDVDS at all. Since I've only seen the first part of "The Wedding Singer," (I thought it stunk and couldn't sit through all of it), I can't say which scene you saw, but my guess is that it wasn't from TDVDS at all. Sorry we can't be of more help.

But it's really bugging me, about the song "That's All." I know I've heard it somplace, and I'm almost positive it was a classic sitcom. I've started digging, and I've found that it was sung in "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour," ep #13, "Lucy Meets the Mustache." Still, I can't help feeling there's more! I've heard it someplace else, but I'm not sure it's our show. Steve

I think Steve tracked it down. I
knew I'd seen it on a sitcom too but couldn't think where. But it was the Lucy-Desi episode with Ernie Kovacs and his wife sang it. (I just looked it up, Edie Adams.) Gee, I'm starting to feel old. It's a nice song and in all these replies I was sure someone was gonna mention Rick Nelson or Nat King Cole as the most famous version they remember. Rod Stewart does it nice. And the Michael Buble version looks to be good too. |
