Default Carrie Movie or TV Film?

I have the original Carrie movie from 1976 on VHS.About two years ago, there was a televised remake of the film.I don't find it to be as scary as the original Sissy spacek version.Which do you prefer?

I've only ever seen the TV version, because it was on and I watched it with my mom.

The 1976 version is far better then the television movie. Still, the TV movie was pretty good.

If the ending of the TV version of Carrie had been changed, it would have been a close to perfect adaptation. I like the original too, but it was annoying how much it had changed from the book (though Sissy Spacek was better as Carrie). Patricia Clarkson is better as Carrie's mother in the new one (Piper Laurie was a bit schizophrenic and theatrical in her role- Clarkson has a more evil air aobut her- especially in Dogville).

I'm not sure which I like better. If the tv-version is on video, I'll buy it and compare both films.

The tv version is not on video, at least I don't think so, but it is out on DVD.

That's interesting. In my opinion Piper Laurie was way better - she had that character down. Yeah she was psycho, but that was the point. I really don't like Clarkson that much to begin with, and she didn't really do all that she could have with her part. Sissy Spacek was better, but the girl in the new version did do a very good job. I own both movies. I tend to turn the new one off before the ending and try to pretend it's not there.

The new version ends that way because there was a plan at one point to do a tv series about Carrie living in Florida dealing with her psychic abilities. That sounds like a great idea for a show- but they should've left Stephen King's story out of it and just not have made it about Carrie White!!! The ending ruins the tv version. I'd like to see the endinmg as in the book- it's been a while from I've read it but Carrie dies a while after she kills Billy Nolan when he tries to crash into her. She haemorrages in a car park with Sue by her side. In one version the PE teacher doesn't die, in the other she does- can't remember which one it happened in (I think she died in the book).

The original had a very frightening final scene- but I didn't like that Carrie was killed by her house falling on her. Brian De Palma's split screen use for Carrie at the prom ("They're all gonna laugh at you!") was very effective though- I saw De palma use that for 'Phantom of the Paradise'. In terms of more imaginative directing- the original is better.

I just thought Clarkson had more of an air or evil about her. Liza, have you seen Dogville? After seeing Dogville you can't help but be reminded of the wickedness of Clarkson's character in Dogville.

There is one VERY camp line in the new Carrie and a silly attempt to update the film to modern day; Carrie is searching for telekinesis on the internet, and when she tells her Mom about it she says in a really wicked voice "THE INTERNET!"- you can just imaigne Kathy Bates in The Waterboy saying that- "The Internet is the Devil!"

I always thought Kathy Bates would've been great as Carrie's Mom- slightly too old, but she's a great actress.

Do they not have the mom saying "They're all gonna laugh at you in the movie when they do the split screen , when they show the movie on TV or did I just not hear it?

Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie own those roles, and the Oscar nominations they both recieved for their acting in Carrie proved that. Piper Laurie also brought some dark humor to the role that was missing from the television movie.

I'm in the middle of the book right now. Well, I was. The nine books I'm reading for school take precedence, but once I graduate in December I'll finish it

Yeah Clarkson did an okay job, I just am a huge Piper Laurie fan. To begin with I believe she's a much better actress than Clarkson. She was Margaret White. Clarkson had a good interpretation, but I just wasn't very impressed by her. She should have pushed further.

I agree that the idea of a TV series with a girl with telekinesis could have been an interesting show - if they'd left Carrie alone. I've been reading about how Stephen King wrote the original novel, (two girls he knew in highschool that both died young). I dare anybody to read that and then tell me that Carrie White should have lived happily ever after. It's totally missing the point.
