Prince Harry has been accused of "lashing out" at a paparazzi photographer who snapped him leaving a nightclub.

The young royal, third in line for the throne, was hit in the face with a camera in the scuffle - and photographer Chris Uncle said Harry "deliberately lashed out" at him and had to be restrained by his own minders.

Mr Uncle, 24, who works for the Big Pictures photo agency, said: "Prince Harry looked like he was inside the car and we were all still taking pictures.

"Then suddenly he burst out the car and lunged towards me as I was still taking pictures.

"He lashed out and then deliberately pushed my camera into my face. The base of the camera struck me and cut my bottom lip.

"At the same time, he was repeatedly saying: 'Why are you doing this? Why don't you just leave me alone?'"

Mr Uncle claimed the royal's protection officers pulled Harry off him and pushed the Prince back into the car.

Another witness said the Prince was swearing during the altercation and buried his head in his knees afterwards as his car sped away.

The 20-year-old was leaving Pangaea in the West End of London when photographers attempted to take pictures of him.

A Clarence House spokesman gave a more restrained version of events, claiming the Prince was defending himself when the incident happened at around 3am.

"Prince Harry was hit in the face by a camera as photographers crowded around him as he was getting into a car," the spokesman said.

"In pushing the camera away, it's understood that a photographer's lip was cut."

The incident comes just a week after the new army recruit was accused of cheating in his art A-level exam.

Prince Harry has a promising career as an army officer ahead of him when he goes to train at the elite Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, where discipline is paramount.

His visits to London nightclubs have often led to his exploits appearing in the papers.
