I don't know what it is about that photo, but their faces look fake. Especially Mr. Howl's face.

It's not a photograph. It's a computer mockup (painting). The picture on the first set looks like a photograph that's being touched up.

Actually Steve,

It's from an original B&W Photo of the seven castaways taken on a raft in the lagoon from the second season that has just been colorized.

Did you mean season 1 colourised because 2 and 3 were shot in colour.

The New Season 2 Cover is originally a Black & White photo from the second season. It is a photo of all SEVEN CASTAWAYS posing for a publicity shot in the lagoon.
All Warner Bros. has simply done for the new DVD Cover was take that photo and colorize it!
I was not talking about any episodes.

I think this is the photograph in question. On closer examination it's a pity they didn't spend a little more time with the original. It seems as well as cutting and pasteing, they've slightly altered the faces as well. Still any cover will do as long as the actual episodes aren't altered in any way.

Mist from the waterfall.

Nice effect, was not always on, usually during intro's only.
