TV-Turnoff Network, formerly TV-Free America, is a nonprofit organization that encourages children and adults to watch much less television in order to promote healthier lives and communities.

Founded in 1994, TV-Turnoff Network is dedicated to the belief that we all have the power to determine the role that television plays in our own lives. Rather than waiting for others to make "better" TV, we can turn it off and reclaim time for our families, our friends, and for ourselves.

TV-Turnoff Network has helped millions of people do just that. Our two primary programs, TV-Turnoff Week and More Reading, Less TV, help people, especially children, to turn off TV and turn on life.

TV-Turnoff Week is a grassroots project that works. More than 65 national organizations, including the American Medical Association, the National Education Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, support or endorse TV-Turnoff Week. TV-Turnoff Week succeeds because our network of thousands works hard to organize local schools, clubs, religious congregations, and communities. Since 1995, more than 24 million people have participated in TV-Turnoff Week.

More Reading, Less TV is a four week program that helps elementary school teachers motivate their students to put down their remote controls and pick up books instead. More than 30,000 students nationwide have benefited from More Reading, Less TV, and the program gets results.

According to an independent study, the program improves students' reading habits and their attitudes toward reading, especially among those who identify themselves as poor readers. Students watch less television, read more, and participate in more screen-free activities than before. Fully 94 percent of teachers would like to participate again.

TV-Turnoff Network also works to raise public awareness about the negative
impact of excessive television. By working with the media, distributing fact sheets, and communicating directly with the public, TV-Turnoff Network continues to shift the debate from concerns about television's content toward an understanding that breaking free of TV is a fun, liberating, and enriching experience.

With a full-time staff of four, TV-Turnoff Network garners the lion's share of its funding from memberships, individual donations, and from sales of its products. Though small, we make a real difference in millions of lives.

Arguing that excessive television is unhealthy is one thing, but I hate when the bring up the reading thing.

Well i'm a TV nut so its really hard for me go without TV for a day so I can't imagine what a whole week would be like.

Agree completely. I don't know why people think excessive reading automatically makes somebody smart.

And besides, if I watched less TV than I wouldn't have much to talk about here. Isn't my time with my messageboard buddies valuable?

As for reading, I've only read one book complete, "The Pigman". I thought it was a great book. Other than that, I just get bored with books. Well with the exception of my TV book.

I wish people who start ideas like TV Turn Off Week would simply let people make up their own minds. You're not making people any smarter or dumber [what?] People like TV. Leave them alone to decide whether it's ''excessive'' or not. Personally, in honor of that week, I'll watch twice as much as I do now.

TV turn-off week is bull****. It was probably invented by some cheap person who wanted to save on their electricity and cable bills.

And I completely agree with Chambers and barwars about reading vs. TV. I enjoy reading, but I'd rather watch a good sitcom! You can learn a lot through TV... maybe even more than in books!

OK I'll stop watching television for week because it is invading my life.

Instead, I will stuff myself in a corner with a stack of paper (binded together) for a week. That should be fun and enriching.
