Question Bill Bixby as Mike Brady

I think Bill Bixby would have made a terrific father to Greg, Marcia, Peter, Jan, Bobby and Cindy -- do y'all?

I can't picture Bill Bixby as Mike Brady. I even have a hard time picturing Gene Hackman as Mike

I think Bill Bixby was better qualified to play Tom Corbett and he got along very well with his co-star Brandon Cruz. I can't picture anybody else playing Tom and Eddie Corbett, but Mike Lookinland auditioned for the part of Eddie Corbett and turned that part down in favor of his role on "Brady Bunch". "Brady Bunch" and Courtship of Eddie's Father" have always been my all-time favorite TV shows and the roles went to the right people. I can't even imagine Brandon Cruz playing Bobby Brady instead of Eddie Corbett, because he bonded so well with Bill Bixby.

From what I understand, Gene Hackman (Hoosiers, The Firm, The French Connection) was considered for the part of Mike Brady. However, CBS execs didn't want an unknown actor. Wow, were they wrong! I like Gene Hackman; however, Robert Reed is the only person who can play Mike Brady. Gary Cole is a VERY close second!

Were the credits for Gene Hackman really necessary? Anyone who doesn't know who he is has no business watching tv or movies. The story of Gene Hackman being considered for the role of Mike Brady is true. He wanted to do it but ABC (Not CBS) didn't want to cast the role with someone who was then a virtual unknown so the role went to Robert Reed. Also, the original choice for Carol was not Florence Henderson, it was Carol Lynley.

I think that if "The Brady Bunch" had ran past its fifth season and Robert Reed ended up quitting because of his backstage fued with Sherwood Schwartz, then Bill Bixby would have made a great replacement for him in the role of Mike.

That's news to me. I thought I knew all along that the original choice for the role of Carol was Joyce Bulifant.

You may be right, I read about Carol Lynley being considered for the role in tv guide several years ago. No matter who was first, I can't see anyone other than Florence Henderson in that role.

I've never heard anything about Carol Lynley, but several sources say that Joyce Bulifant was actually cast as Carol Brady. But Florence managed to get in a last-minute screen test and wowed the producers, so they released Joyce. The rest, as they say, is history.

Wouldn't Bill Bixby be too young to have a son Greg's age?

Guess not, looked up their ages after posting that. I think of how young Bill Bixby looked on My Favorite Martian and his guest appearance on the Andy Griffith Show. Doesn't seem old enough to have a child Greg's age.

Robert Reed & Bill Bixby were only 2 years apart in age. Reed was born in 1932 & Bixby in 1934.

I think Florence Henderson and Robert Reed were great parents to the kids on the show. All they needed was a caring, wonderful parents. The show was a very good and funny show. It was great. I can't imagine other people playing the kids parents.
