Here we are! Another Motown 45th Anniversary Artist Avatar of the Week. Where this week features the first Motown female singer named Mary Wells. In the early 60's, Mary Wells offered a deal with Motwn and released her first single "Bye Bye Baby" was a Top 20 hit. Then around 1962 and 1963, she released her singles that made it to the charts like "Two Lovers", "You Beat Me to the Punch", "The One Who Really Loves You" and her first and only #1 song "My Guy" by 1964. Her last single for Motown was a duet with Marvin Gaye on "What's a Matter With You, Baby" until she left in 1964 and went to 20th Century-Fox Records and released her hit singles that didn't make it to the charts. That lasted one year. She went to Atco (Atlantic division) and then finally ended up at Jubilee and didn't do well either. She wrote and produced a lot of sessions in the late 60's and early 70's with her second husband Cecil Womack. She died of throat cancer back in 1992.
