A good meal for Kramer

Michael Richards looks back at his time as Cosmo Kramer on US sitcom Seinfeld as if it were a satisfying meal.

In Sydney to promote the release of the popular US sitcom on DVD, Richards spoke candidly about his time on the long-running sitcom.

"I have lived through it," Richards said of Seinfeld, adding that he didn't miss it.

"It has been a full experience like the eating of a good meal. You don't walk away from the table going, I sure missed those potatoes or I sure miss that corn.

"No, you just eat well and walk away with a burp."

Richards landed the gig as Kramer in 1989 and quickly became known around the world as the wild-haired, well-meaning neighbour to Jerry Seinfeld.

The show also starred Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Jason Alexander and has gone down in history as one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, running from 1989 to 1998.

Each Seinfeld episode has a name, from The Stakeout and Male Unbonding to The Pez Dispenser and The Parking Space.

Richards couldn't specify a favourite episode but said he loved "any of the shows where I'm going into character".

"Anything that amplified Kramer's sense of direction fascinated me," he said.

The DVD will feature all those episodes from series one to three and a host of extras including cast commentary, interviews and deleted scenes.

"We will show you how we make an episode and each episode you see, you are gonna see how that episode was created from the beginning to end," Richards said.

Seinfeld is famous for its special sayings such as "yada yada yada" and "these pretzels are making me thirsty".

Asked what had made Seinfeld one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, Richards found it hard to pinpoint.

"Chemistry. Talent. Spirit. You just get everybody together like that," he said.

"Everybody can do their deal. It is just how the magnetism or something is arranged and this kind of phenomena occurs. Right place, right time but who could have wilfully brought that about.

"It just comes along in this manner and I suppose that is what makes life so exciting."

Richards will be in Australia until Saturday before heading back to his hometown of Los Angeles.

He trained in classical theatre and would like to work on the stage again.

"It is a great place to just be the actor, 360 degrees on stage, live out there every night and there is nothing like it," he said.

"It just gets your juices going."

Seinfeld Volume One and Two will be released nationally on October 20 through Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment.

But Richards never seemed like Kramer at all in real life, I remember he showed off his huge home library on the E! channel, I never thought of him lkie that before...

And yeah, I agree, he doesn't seem to be anything like Kramer, so this is a little surprising.
