Default Square Pegs: "The Sophomore Blues" Part One

Patty Green and Lauren Huchinson made their way through the crowded halls of Weemawee High School in search of the lockers that had been assigned to them for the 1983-1984 school year. The halls were a buzz of frenzied activity as students talked amongst one another, catching up on all the gossip after a summer away from Weemawee.
"I'm telling you Patty," smiled Lauren through her infamous braces,"this is going to be our year. This is the year that we are going to be popular."
"If I'm not mistaken, Lauren,"said the bispectacled Patty, "Those were the exact same words that you used at the beginning of last year, and as it turned out we failed to climb the social ladder."
"Oh, Patty, do you have to be such a pessimist? Things are going to be different this year. You'll see. First of all, we are going to be sophomores this year. You know what that means?"
"No, but I'm sure you are going to tell me"
"See, last year we were just freshman. Now, you know that all the upper classmen look down on the freshman. Even the popular freshman are looked down upon."
"With the exception of Vinnie and Jennifer"
"Exactly. This year though we will not have that handicap."
"Perhaps not, but we'll have plently of others. I don't know if you have forgotten this or not but I still wear glasses and that metal wired to your teeth still looks like braces to me."
"That is easily fixed. Simple, don't wear your glasses."
"Yeah, that is a brilliant idea dumb-dumb, how do you expect me to see?"
"Easy, make sure you always have someone with you. Then that someone can help guide you to all of your classes."
"Okay, Lauren, how about your braces?"
"I'm still willing to try white-out. I'll just spread the white-out across my braces to camouflage them. No one will even know that I even have braces. And if that doesn't work, I'll talk through my lips."
"Lauren, no one can talk through thier lips. The best you can do is mumble How long do you think you'll get away doing that? Pluse you'll look like an idiot doing it, and that will not help our chances of becoming popular."
Lauren and Patty rounded the corner where they literally ran into their pals, Marshall and Johnny Slash.
"Lauren! Patty! We were hoping to run into you gals," said Marshall. "Johnny and I were just on the way to the radio staion. I have a whole bunch of brand new records for this year, including the new Devo live album."
"Hello Marshall, hello Johnny," said Patty.
"Hi guys, "said Lauren. "We were just on our way to our lockers."
"Oh, yeah," said Marshall, "where are they?"
"Down the art hallway," said Lauren. "Patty and I both have art first period."
"You know what Lauren, "said Marshall. "I think that you have gotten more beautiful over the summer."
"Marshall," said Lauren. "You act like you haven't seen us all summer. Patty and I went to the grease with you and Johnny on Friday."
Johnny, who was munching on a can of Pringles, offered the girls some of his snack. Patty shook her head to indicate she wasn't interested, but Lauren reached into the can and pulled out a handfull of chips.
"Well, we'll see you lovely ladies second period for health," said Marshall.
"Yeah, see yah," said Lauren.
"Bye," said Patty as the guys headed on their way.
Patty and Lauren continued on down the hallway, turned right and entered the hallway which contained the art classes.
"We're over her," said Patty, looking down at a piece of paper with her locker number written on it.
Patty and Lauren walked up to their individual lockers when they both noticed that occupying the locker directly next to them was thier greatest nemesis, and the most popular girl at Weemawee, Jennifer DeNuchio.
"Like gross me into next week," said Jennifer in her valley girl dialect, noticing Patty and Lauren.
"Oh, no" said Lauren and Patty in unison.

TO BE CONTIUNED...

Mike, this took me right back to those nights when I would sit in front of the tv for another 'round of shenanigans at Weemawee. I'm looking forward to what you have in store for us next.

"Like gross me into next week." <--- One of my favorite lines!
