It's not just steam. There's ash, too.

But it's very, very minor compared to the 1980 eruption. We haven't seen anything like this since 1986. It's not going to hurt anyone, so right now I'm in "this is pretty cool" mode.

It's nice to look at. First volcanic eruption in the U.S.(that I know of) in my life.

There was a really neat close-up aerial shot on one of my locals when the eruption was occuring. It was really neat.

Someone who has retired on Fox says magma is moving down in the volcano so it may not be done yet.

All the experts are saying that this is probably the beginning of an eruptive period. Perhaps St. Helens has begun another dome-building period.
