"Tyler" = Paul Beal from today's episode- committed grand larceny??? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

If anyone watched today's first episode, you saw the amnesia victim "Tyler" who was found in the nevada desert. He apparently didn't know who he was and claimed he didn't know anything about his past except something about San Diego and knowing how to fix race car tires or something. Then, the update showed a sweating Paul Beal watching UM, finding out his real name and identity, and locating his family in Idaho (I think). I read somewhere earlier in the posts that this same Paul Beal committed grand larceny somewhere in the country, and faked the amnesia attack to get away with it?? This doesn't make sense to me, but it is a possibility. He wouldn't come to UM and tell his story if he committed a crime and knew about it, would he? Does anyone who watched today's show, or know anything about this case have any info??

Not that I doubt TJ's memory (the person who posted that once upon a time there was an update stating that Paul Beal was wanted for grand larceny), but there definitely was another segment on within the last month or so about an amnesia victim (older guy...middle aged....I believe he lived somewhere out West and they showed him riding his bike around town) and he found out he was wanted for something (i'm pretty sure it was grand larceny) when UM found his family. Is there a possibility that there's confusion about the 2 amnesia cases? That would explain why the update we saw didn't mention criminal activity.

There is no confusion. The original update mentioned that he was wanted for grand larceny and it was listed on a presskit I got on ebay. I never said that he faked having amnesia or that the update implied that. I've read that traumatic events can trigger amnesia though. If you remember one of the later cases on the amnesia victim 'Pat' he embezzled some money. That's the case nowheregirl is referring to I believe.

On January 28, 1991, a man in his late twenties was discovered lying by a road just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. After recovering from dehydration and exposure, authorities were astounded to learn that the man had no identity and suffered from a severe case of amnesia. The man was dubbed "Tyler Doe" and was searching for clues to his past. Tyler Doe has recently been identified as twenty-three-year-old Paul Beal of Boise, Idaho. Beal had been reported as missing five days before he was found in the desert, and was also wanted on a charge of grand larceny. Beal has waived extradition and is now back in Boise, where is expected to stand trial.

The case first aired on 10/02/91.

That is such a shocker!! "Tyler" seemed so genuine that he didn't remember ANYTHING about himself. He must be a pretty darn good liar to be able to speak on camera saying how he can't even remember his family or anything. He had quite the nerve.

Thanks, TJ. Very interesting case. You'd think these crimes would be more traumatic for the victims than for the perpetrators.

I just saw this episode on the Mystery Channell in Canada. It was a very cool story, I wqondered what he was up to now did he ever regain his full memory?

It never said anything about grand larceny so it must have been in the oriiginal broadcast airing. That makes the story more interesting.

If anyone has the box set for Aliens go to the 200th update portion of the dvds. They show the Tyler case, he was charged with grand larceny. It is a wonder how he was sweating like bastard. I wonder if he really did not remember. He was probably tramatized because he had to wear those thick glasses all the time and had that one black shirt he wore on the show and update. That is why I love unsolved all the freaks and weirdos profiled.

I just rewatched this case again and I thought I would throw my two cents in.

I actually believe the memory loss for this reason. Why on Earth would he fake amnesia to get away with a crime and then go on Unsolved Mysteries to tell his story? That goes beyond stupidity. Maybe he was tired of running and wanted to go back and face the music, but in that case, why not just go? Why expose yourself on National TV?

He could very well have faked it, and if he did, he's an idiot. But looking at the case, you have a guy in his early 20s with a marriage that fell apart, two kids, and committed a crime that he was going to go to jail for. He probably just had a mental break down and combine that with the heavy exposure in the Nevada desert, I'm willing to believe that he suffered amnesia.

I personally think he faked the amnesia to avoid jail time and/or possible leniency in his sentencing. It would be the perfect defense for him if he did go to court for the larcency, "I don't remember anything, not even my family!"
