I don't remember a lot about the Penny episodes at all, since I can't see any of the reruns currently. Hopefully that will change if they release ALL the seasons on DVD. I do remember liking the 4 part episode where she first came on and was abused. That seemed like a fairly involving, well written 4 parter. Still not as good as the ones WITH James, though . . .

I really disliked the episodes with Carl, though. Seemed like those episodes were going NOWHERE.

With me, it's no secret what I dislike the most about "Good Times'': The Constant Moralizing.
It's one thing when the moral actually has something to do with the theme pf the show, but GT, more than any of Norman Lear's other series, absolutely wallowed in the crusading, often to the detriment of the series, as well as ofttimes straining credibility (if you're starving and about to be evicted, you're not going to be too particular when money drops out of the sky and right into your lap, right? Well, not as far as the Evans family is concerned, that's for sure!!) People, I watch a situation comedy strictly for laughs, nothing else...I don't want to be bombarded every week with someone else's agenda on a weekly basis (..unless, of course, it's well-written...and "Good Times", for the most part, and especially after the third season, was most certainly NOT!) |

James left, Keith, and just about the whole last season. You could tell nobody wanted to be there anymore.

the fact that the family could never quite catch a break. they would get some great news about something (a new job, scholarship, contest, commercial) and then right before the commercial break, they get kicked down again.
where, please tell me, are the good times? |
