You need a tv tuner or capture device like this

And for DVDs, it's best that you use a DVD-Rom drive for best results.

I use PowerDVD. Here are some results I've gotten:

Really, the setup didn't cost me much at all. The hardware and software combined was less than $100. And I bought it back in 2002.
