Felt it here in my office in the Los Angeles area. It was quite some distance away from my area; we shouldn't have felt it. But we did.

Me, too. I'm sure he's fine, though.

Less importantly, I hope his Cadillacs are okay.

I haven't heard any details, but a 5 to 5.8 earthquake is relatively small. The ones we've had around here that did substantial damage were in the 6.7 to 7.1 range. Mathematically, those are much stronger than in the 5 range.

Read this about the richter scale. That will give you an idea how much more powerful the Loma Prieta quake was in 1987 and the Northridge quake was in 1994 compared to this one. (So far, that is, ). Those quakes were both in the 7 range.

http://www.seis.utah.edu/HTML/GQ8
Each 1-unit increase in the Richter Scale roughly corresponds to a 30-fold increase in energy release and a 10-fold increase in ground motion at any site.

I heard that the quake was centered in Parkfield. This is the town which is semi-famous for averaging one approximately magnitude 6 earthquake every 22 years. Although it actually ranges from 12 to over 30 years. This last gap (1966-2004) is one of the longest.

Yes, all of the Cadillacs are okay. A little dusty, but okay!
Thanks for the concern.

I did not even feel this quake at all. It happened in the morning and I was at work, moving around. Which is fine with me... the 6.7 1994 Northridge quake is the last I want to experience for a long time.
