You beat me to it, calvertfan! I was on my way here to start a thread about this myself, but I guess now I don't have to! Now we can only hope they do manage to put the bonuses on the DVD's. I mean, it's not like I wouldn't buy them without, but it's always more fun to get some "goodies" besides the episodes we've all already seen.

Some of us have only ever seen two (!!) episodes of S2 so this is VERY exciting news even without goodies

hehe, oh yeah, I forgot about that! I was going to ask which two they were, but they're the ones from that "best of" set, right? There are definitely other good season 2 episodes for you to look forward to!

I agree that having "goodies" is a benefit but at this point we should keep our fingers crossed that Season Two will be issued at all. Forget any extras, I just want to see the episodes. I really hope they issue the Season Two Set because this series didn't really get started until AFTER Season One. So, the best is definitely yet to come.

I really don't see why they need to split the season up at all, why don't they just have like 1 extra then the whole season, I doubt the price would be really high if they did that.

How many episodes in Season 2? If there's about 22-24 then why split it up?

I think it's good that they split it up. Some people can buy a $39-49.99 DVD set but others aren't fortunate enough to afford it. The Lost in Space Season 2 Volume 1 is $29.99. The first season was around 60 to 76 bucks. I don't think it's so much that people aren't interested in it a lot. It's probably because they want it but there are more important things to do and buy and TV show DVDs aren't the highest priority.

Don't forget that Lost in Space is an hour long show.

There really is no reason why MTM cant be released in one entire season.

Look at other shows like Gilligan's Island and My Favorite Martian with over 30 episodes and you can find them for under $40.00.

Splitting it just makes it seem cheaper I know if I saw it split, I'd feel better paying $45 today and then $45 next week and getting TWO boxed sets, rather than spending $90 on just the one, it seems better y'know? Even though it's the same end point.

(And yes I did have to pay $90 (Australian) for S1!)

(And yep, the two eps from the 'best of' )

I just bought the Season Five dvd set of Sanford and Son at Walmart a few weeks back and I'm pretty sure it was around 29 dollars for an entire season. Why can't they issue an entire season for around this price???? Now assuming they could issue an entire season for, say, this 30 dollar price range and then they break the season into two volumes and sell each volume for around 15 dollars, I could see where they're coming from. They're trying to get the "compulsive" buyers to buy the sets when they see them in the stores and compulsive buyers will be more apt to buy a set if they can afford them at cheaper prices. Even compulsive buyers won't buy something they can't afford. For example, I would love to buy the season set of SCTV but it's around 70 dollars at WalMart. I also want to get the Season One set of Reno911. It costs around 20 dollars. A compulsive buyer would be much more apt to go ahead and spend the 20 dollars. They would be more hesitant to decide to spend 70 dollars. But again that takes us back to where we started from. If Sanford and Son, for example, can sell for around 29 dollars, why can't MTM sell for around the same price????? I forget how much I paid for Season One of MTM when it first came out. I remember that I bought it at Best Buy but I can't remember how much I paid for it. I think it was around 45 dollars.

Oh come now, there is no way to compare the two. Sanford & Son is just a transfer of the tapes onto DVD. There was no remastering done to that show at all. It looks fuzzy when compared to The Mary Tyler Moore Show. With The Mary Tyler Moore Show, they actually remastered and polished up the episodes along with the show's audio. Also, we got the original commercials, a quiz game and a cool documentary with all surviving cast members participating. Of course that would drive the cost of the DVD set up. Sanford & Son's DVD set just can't compare...

The thing is, The Mary Tyler Moore Show did sell respectably well, especially for its price range, but FOX thought it needed to sell more so that they could make back what was put into it. There was a lot more love and care put into The Mary Tyler Moore Show Season 1 than there was Sanford & Son. What extras are included there? Ads for other DVDs, right? I know because I have all 3 DVD sets of All in the Family and Good Times, which is the same company that releases Sanford & Son. No commentaries are included, no documentaries, no trivia, no outtakes, nothing. You'd swear they merely transferred the shows from VHS onto DVD with no cleaning up whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong, Sanford & Son is a great show and worthy of respect just as much as any other classic, but the DVD treatment of that show is miles behind The Mary Tyler Moore Show. It's like comparing seafood salad with lobster...

Pardon moi!!! Oh my gosh, I didn't know I was writing something so controversial when I used that example of the S & S dvd set. I was only making a statement about the price of that particular set. I don't remember making any comparisons one way or the other about quality, features, etc, etc, etc!!!! LOL! Calm down. Yes, you're right. S & S had no extra's and that cuts the cost of the product. But that's my point. To me, the bottom line is this: which is more important? The actual episodes or the extras? Yes, to have both would be nice. But if I had to choose between "extra's" and "episodes" I would rather have the episodes. I don't even watch extra's on DVD's normally. I did recently get the Battlestar Galactica dvd set and I watched the "deleted scenes" but normally I just enjoy the episodes and don't even watch any extra features. But, hey, that's just me.

For what it's worth, I didn't mean to sound like I was coming down your throat. If that's how it seemed, then I apologize. I was just trying to point out that the difference in quality is one reason for the price difference. It just doesn't boil down to extras either. You can tell that the episodes themselves on The Mary Tyler Moore Show have been touched up. I've never seen them look so bright or so clear. Sanford & Son on the other hand looks just as fuzzy as when I first saw it on the air. Clearly the company who put out Sanford & Son didn't put too much $$ into the DVD sets; therefore they can afford to sell it for less.

I just wanted to make sure this was understood.

Peace...

Ed

The big sticking point with FOX seems to be that MTM didn't sell enough copies. I find it hard to believe that 85,000 copies of MTM isn't comparable to sales of other shows. I mean, c'mon. Punky Brewster Season 2 is in the works! How many copies could that show have sold?!
