Default Was Adam pointless?

It is very rare for a TV character to give birth twice during the run of a show. Was Adam a pointless character? In some ways he was in that there was only one episode written around him (Adam Warlock or Washout- which was a remake of an episode about Tabitha). If Elizabeth Montgomery wasn't pregnant in years 5-6 I doubt that Adam would have been added into this series.

By the way is there any other series outside of the soap operas where a character gave birth more than once? I can only think of Carla on Cheers.

I agree, Adam was pointless except for making for some pregnancy episodes. However, had the series continued, there could have been some more attention paid to him andTabitha and addl plot lines surrounding the kids could have been developed.

They could've worked around adding him in, since Ms Montgomery didn't look pregnant at the end of year 5 and they could've just began filming year 6 after she had her baby. I think they wrote it into the show to distract from the Darrin switch. If you ever saw the episode where Samantha announces she's pregnant again Dick York is nowhere in sight. By that point he had already left the show.

I don't think it was possible to film around this pregnancy since EM was pregnant from September 1968 until June 1969. They had started to film season six in mid 1968.

I think the sixth season started being filmed in March of 1969 for four (or five?) episodes of pregnant Samantha, and then a break until August. Season six started being filmed immediately after season five was wrapped up with its many Darrin-less episodes.

The purpose of Adam was to boost ratings, which were starting to suffer by that time. But ultimately it didn't work. Sitcoms were starting to get more "edgy", which would eventually leave shows like Bewitched, Jeannie and the all the "king of cornpone" CBS sitcoms in the dust.

Adam was pointless, he was dull, the character seemed to have no real role on the show

The whole last two or three seasons of the show were pointless -- no more Dick York, and countless remakes of old episodes. Adam fit right in.

Did Adam have any of his own storylines?

Mm-hmm. The main one was "Adam, Warlock or Washout", which focused on whether Adam had any powers. (He did, but they were repressed).

Tabitha had quite a few story lines but Adam had hardly any, it does make
you wonder why the had him on the show. They could have had more episodes involving him.

I don't think Adam was pointless, just under used not his fault. Season 6 was one of the best with the replacement Darrin since it featured a pregnant Sam. I loved Samantha's Curious Cravings. I also liked Samantha's Yoo Hoo Maid. Then after the birth we had another great episode featuring Tabitha wanting a Mommy of her very own that she didn't have to share with anyone. Sam had to reassure Tabitha that she had enough love for both her and the new baby. So I say thank you Adam!!

I actually think Adam would have served a greater purpose had they made him a completely mortal baby. It would have proved that Samantha was right when she was pregnant with Tabitha: that her baby could have witchly powers or it could be a "normal, mortal baby." As it turned out, I didn't really see the purpose of adding another baby to the show, especially another "witch".
