Thunderbirds: Father & Son

Summary: It is hours before Lady Penelope and Scott are due to get married and Jeff decides to have a talk with his oldest son.

Jeff Tracy psyched himself up before going into the room. This was such an important day for his oldest son Scott - he didn't want to screw it up. He tentatively opened the door and peeked in.

Scott stood by the window, seemingly lost in thought as he spoke to a picture of his late mother.

He looks so handsome! Jeff thought to himself. He was content to watch him in silence for awhile. He was mesmerized by the way the sunlight turned his son's blue eyes almost to emerald green and sparkled off his engagement ring. His ring...he hardly seemed old enough to be wearing that...

Scott broke out of his speaking to his mother's photograph and finally noticed his father.

"Dad, how long have you been standing there?" he asked.

Jeff smiled trying hard not to cry, "Not long, son. You just looked so peaceful... I didn't want to disturb you..."

Scott grinned, "Don't worry about it...I could use the company. John ran off a little while ago to check on something, and I've been stuck here by myself ever since!"

"Well...I had nothing better to do...and I got tired of
waiting....and..." then Jeff felt the tears in his eyes well up.

Scott smiled again, "It's okay, Dad. Come sit with me for awhile?"

"Sure, Scott." Jeff told his son proudly.

Scott carefully lowered himself into a chair and smoothed the front of his jacket. Jeff dropped into the chair across from his.

"How are you doing, Son?"

"Pretty well..." he laughed, "It's weird. I'm sort of giddy, bored,
nervous, and excited all at the same time!"

Jeff laughed. "I'm not surprised. This is a big day for you and Penelope..."

Scott looked concerned for a moment.

"What is it, Scott?"

"Well...did you ever...I mean...were you sure that you and mom were doing the right thing?"

Jeff answered him as honestly as possible. "Despite what happened between your mom and me before she passed on, I wouldn't have changed a thing. I got *you* and your brothers out of the deal, after all..."

Tears welled up in Jeff's eyes, Scott patted his father's shoulder and said "Oh, Dad.... don't go cryin' on me now....you know I can't take that!"

Scott handed his father a tissue, then moved his chair next to his and patted his back until the tears subsided. Scott looked a little sheepish.

"I'm sorry about that, Scott."

"That's Okay, Dad. You seem to be doing that a lot lately!"

"Thank you, son...this is an emotional time for you. I understand."

Scott smiled and they sat in comfortable silence for awhile. Jeff noticed as he checked his watch a couple of times.

"It won't be much longer now, huh?"

Scott looked a little nervous.

"I know...I can't believe this is actually happening..."

"Me, either, Scott. It seems like only yesterday you were five
years old and I couldn't keep your head out of the sky. Now look at you - you're a grown man, about to embark upon the biggest journey of your life..."

Jeff looked a little wistful as he kept on crying and he held on tightly as Scott took his hand.

He looked up at him with huge sapphire eyes, and whispered,
"I'm not scared, Pop..."

He hadn't called him "Pop" in over 10 years. He knew his own son *must* be nervous.

"It's alright, lad...it's perfectly natural to be nervous. I know
*I* was..."

"You?" he asked incredulously.

"Yeah, me. In fact, I was scared to death! It was your mom who was the calm one. That always amazed me about her - she was so cool and collected through the whole thing. Hell, she's the one who kept *me* together!"

Scott laughed and Jeff was pleased to see that he had relaxed a
whole lot.

"How's Penelope holding up?" he asked.

"Oh, about the same as I was..."

"Oooh. That bad, huh?"

Jeff shook his head gravely.

"Worse."

"Great. I hope she doesn't do anything stupid, like, run off or
something..."

"Don't worry, Alan and Parker are standing guard. I think even Virgil and Gordon are keeping an eye out for her after Virgil stops playing that piano and Gordon stops singing. She's not going
anywhere, Son. Not today..."

"But she knows Alan's got this...this...*knack* for getting into trouble during important moments. Remember Uncle Peter and Aunt Sarah's wedding?"

"Please, Scott, don't remind me! I thought we were never going to get *my* youngest brother married that day! But just remember this, everything turned out fine that day, and everything will be fine today. Unconventional, maybe, but that's par for the course with this family..."

Scott smiled at him.

"Thanks, Dad. I'm glad we got to have this time together."

"Me, too. So...we should probably find Penelope and get this show on the road, huh?"

A strange look passed over Scott's face.

"Uh....can you hurry, Dad?"

Scott struggled not to laugh as that stricken look that only a proud father can achieve came across his father's face as he stopped crying.

He started to giggle as he bolted for the door.

And he finally gave a hearty laugh as he heard him yell down the corridor.

"Penelope!!!! Get in here! Your husband's about to take you down the aisle!"

Scott sighed and looked at his mother's photograph.

"Well, Mom, there goes the proudest father-in-law-to-be you could might have possibly seen if you were still alive. You're about to have the luckiest son in the entire world...."
