Question Foreign-made DVDs

I purchased brand-new, sealed M*A*S*H DVDs from Hong Kong recently. So far, out of what I watched(or tried to) already, five do not work. The FBI WARNING and 20th FOX stuff comes up, but then nothing happens. The menu will not appear no matter what I do. This has happend on different season sets, but not with every disc. Does anyone else have this problem?

That's because China is Region 6. You most likely have a Region 1 DVD player. Your discs won't work unless you get a DVD player without region encoding.

I thought of that, but why do most work and not a few random discs?

Maybe they forgot/didn't bother to region-encode a few of them.

I'm sure you won't have those problems with the domestic DVDs. Give 'em a try.

I bought them because they were much cheaper.
I'll probably only get American ones from now on.

P.S. What is the difference between region 1 and 6? For that matter, why are there different ones at all?

This is what I found:

"Region codes were created to please the movie studios that distribute DVD movies. DVD movies are released at different times all over the world (usually in the United States first), and different studios handle distribution. Without region codes, a person in, say, Belgium, could buy a DVD movie in the US before it is actually released in Belgium. That means the studio releasing the DVD movie in Belgium loses out. "

How many seasons of MASH did you get and how much did it cost?

Exactly.

I've done some extensive research to find what the big distributors/studios have to say regarding region encoding, and I've come up with some startling results.

Here are the big corporations, in their own words.

Huh. That makes sense, but it's so frustrating!

I bought seasons 1-4 for(including shipping from Hong Kong) $15.00 each.
The guy I bought it from sells high quality stuff with a 99.8% satisfaction rate, and I didn't want to pay $40.00 apiece for them.

I usually only pay around $25 for them at Costco.

It's a wholesale store. It's known in some areas as Price Club.
