Default "8 Simple Rules" Family remembers John

Cast of '8 Simple Rules' honors Ritter's memory
By William Keck, USA TODAY
HOLLYWOOD — John Ritter's 8 Simple Rules family paid a visit to his grave site at Forest Lawn in Burbank last Friday to mark the one-year anniversary of the actor's death.

Cast members were not invited to Sunday's Emmy Awards, where Ritter is nominated for best actor in a comedy series.
ABC

When the cast — including Katey Sagal, Kaley Cuoco and Amy Davidson — arrived, they discovered that someone had placed an 8 Simple Rules hat on Ritter's burial spot.

"Amy and I sat right on his grave for like an hour and a half," says Cuoco, speaking by telephone Wednesday. "Some people wrote poems or letters. Then we got up, held hands and made a circle around his grave."

Ritter's resting place sits atop a hill that provides a perfect view of the sitcom's soundstage on the Disney/ABC lot.

"It's amazing," Cuoco says. "It's the only stage you can see."

The next day, Sept. 11 (the actual anniversary date), the gang rode roller coasters at Disneyland ("John's favorite place on Earth," Cuoco says) after they finished promotional obligations for their show.

"We decided that we wanted to share Saturday together," Davidson said at Tuesday's premiere of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. "We really had to evaluate 'how do we want to spend this day,' and we thought John would want us to be enjoying ourselves, so we decided to celebrate John ... and play."

Davidson is disappointed that the cast was not invited to Sunday's Emmy Awards, where Ritter is nominated for best actor in a comedy series. "Isn't that a bummer?" she asks. "The cast wasn't included."

Instead, they all will gather at one of their homes to watch the ceremony and root for their pal, which Cuoco actually prefers: "I'll be devastated if he doesn't win."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was totally upset that the cast was not invited to the Emmy's, and totally disappointed that John did not win an Emmy award. I watched the Emmy's just to see if he would win. I thought I saw Amy Yasbeck somewhere in the audience. I kept thinking to myself who was gonna accept John's award for him if he won. If he would've won, I thought it wopuld've been nice if the whole orginal cast was there. and better yet, and if they went up on the stage together as a cast to accept John's Emmy award. But, if he would've won, I'm sure Amy or Jason would've accepted his award for him, which is alright. But, it totally bummed me out when I read this article to find out the cast was not invited! But, I'm happy they chose to spend his 1 year passing/Emmy night in a special way...as a TV family, and as a special way to remember John Ritter, who will be forever missed! This article brought tears to my eyes.

I have never heard of this happening. Usually when a show or someone from a show gets nominated that show is present at the awards. I wonder if any other show that was nominated didn't get an invite. I'm glad they spent the day together though. They're to classy for the Emmys anyway.

Wow, I can't believe he was nominated yet noone in the cast was invited last night. It's nice that they were together, though.

Thank you for sharing the article..

The whole show was horrible nobody won that I wanted to win. It was a big waste of time. When Kelsey got up there to do is speech he paid his respects to John and his family and then they showed Amy I thought that was nice of him.

That's weird. Why wouldn't the cast be invited? That's just stupid.

Default I watched the Emmy's.

They were okay. Half of the shows that won, I never even heard of. What the heck is Curb Your Enthusiasm?
Anyway, Kelsey Grammer won for best actor and he thanked Amy and John's family. They showed a glimpse of Amy smiling at Kelsey. I thought it was so nice of Kelsey to do that. I bet deep down he was thinking that John should have won. I agree. I really wanted John to win.
Too bad none of the cast was there or any of the rest of John's family, only Amy that I could see. I think that it was a great way to honor John by getting a nomination one year after his death, knowing he will never be forgotten.

We love you John!
We miss you!

I know there has been talk of the cast not being "invited", but I heard the Academy Exec producer himself on Access Hollywood say that it was the first he heard of the 8 Simple Rules cast not being invited, and on the tv show Extra, the Academy president said that only the nominees get extra free tickets, and the rest have to pay the tickets. I'm really surprised that they didn't buy tickets ahead of time.
