Default "Between a Yuk And A Hard Place"

"what a friend we have in jesus..."

another episode with dave and maddie on the fritz. agnes gets macguilacuddy to sabatage the elevator when dave and maddie get on it. neither of them talk. but the music drives them crazy. "you musta been a beautiful baby" causes them to come together as dave destroys the speaker. he then starts to sing. they are freed, and are happy and singing.
back to the case, they go back to idio,ca to talk to a man again. he turns out to be the murderer. the chase brings them to a hot air ballon, in which the man steals to run away in. dave dangles from a rope. the man sets it on fire and david climbs to the top. he then cuts the balloon causing it to crash.

the music in the one was chosen very wisely. i cracked up when "the bird" came on as the man threw his birds on them and the birds all go crazy. funny.

i recall a few episodes back, maybe first season where maddie professed to not believe in God and all the christian stuff. but she had no reservations in this song.

personal note, i had a great time when i was in indio,ca 3 1/2 years ago. love the desert.

Right off the bat, I'm going to say that I hated the balloon thing. This is when the chase scenes started to get really lame to me (and it went on way too long). In fact, I can't think of one chase in the 5th season that I liked. Other than that, the episode had a serious undertone (until the silly ending) with the grief over losing the baby hovering over everything. I liked the scene where Agnes tries to get David to talk to Maddie. I also liked the elevator scene a lot. But my problem is with the following episodes. They never mention the baby again! I don't mean that they should have dwelled on it in every conversation but there are many times in the following episodes where you'd never believe that these two had a baby together! This episode served its purpose to show how losing the baby affected both of them. Much of what followed was very disappointing.

So funny to see ... different people, different tastes....
This epi is one of my favourites..............because:

I never saw so much emotion between them, Maddie cries her eyes out and the way he takes her in his arms is heartbreaking....
This is an explosion of all the bottled up frustration of them both, Dave destroying the speaker, Maddie screaming and crying and then there is the peaceful part of her sleeping on his lap and him watching over her and the singing is sooo good. Cybill shows there that she can do a mean Gospel!
The chase isn't very funny but I liked the music a lot, they could have made the ending a little more romantic I guess, this was a little flat....

The elevator scene was great. Its one of the few specific scenes I can remember. It has to have been pretty special for me to remember having only watched it once all these years ago

I am not a big fan of the elevator scene. The inital part with the muzak and David smashing the speaker and Maddie breaking down and crying....that part seemed right and indicated something big was about to happen between them....but then it didn't. I just don't see the resolution there of a couple of hymns being the big statement that I wanted from them. Sorry.... this just doesn't cut it for me.

And why chose hymns???? This seems out of character for me... David would have gone with some blues number and Maddie a standard I think. Maddie for sure wouldn't be the type to sing a hymn.

And then from then on....it is like everything is better....but not really. Not in the way it should be.

Are you my long lost twin? I'm in the exact same position...having seen this one only once - maybe twice - a very long time ago. In fact, this was the first episode I ever saw. I walked in on the chase the first time, though, so I've only watched the elevator scene once.

And oh, what a scene it was! I get teary-eyed just thinking about it. The emotion Mads and Dave both let loose was overpowering. Yet again, outstanding acting by our two leads.

Just seen this episode for the first time since when it first aired! Like most of you I had remembered the elevator scene and not much else. However, I actually really liked the majority of this episode, even the silly case. The emotion in the elevator scene was wonderful, but I agree with Cindy, it doesn't lead where you think it should. They could have progressed David and Maddie's relationship from this point quite well, but they just didn't do anything with it. There was real warmth and love between them when they came out of the elevator, a real sense of healing. Is this due to Glenn Caron leaving do you think, a lack of definite direction??

This episode has gone up in my estimation since I've discovered that it was first aired on my birthday

I can't really remember much about this episode. I remember David hitting the loudspeaker in the lift (sorry, elevator) and having a weird moment where I thought that he was angry at Maddie and taking his anger out on the muzak
I also remember thinking that the balloon scene at the end went on for WAY too long. It was quite a good idea in a sense but it just dragged! And when David said that he'd been thinking about being with Maddie when he was up there, I couldn't help thinking 'Okay, it really didn't seem like that'.

I do remember thinking that it wasn't that bad. It was the first Season 5 episode I saw, I believe, so I thought 'Hey, it wasn't brilliant but it wasn't as bad as some people make out.'

I still can't bring myself to watch the last few eps!
