Old school funk fans! How about these groups: Slave, Kool & the Gang, Ohio Players, Earth, Wind, and Fire, P-Funk, Isley Brothers, Cameo, Gap Band, S.O.S. Band. These are my all-time favorite groups, in no particular order.

All of those groups are off the hook. Those mentioned are definately favorites of mine as well. My other favorites are The Time, Frankie Beverly & Maze, The Whispers, War & The Brothers Johnson. My all-time favorite band is the S.O.S. Band All of these groups take groovin' to a whole new level.

It's about time somebody on here posted about those old funk bands. I love Cameo, The Gap Band, Zapp, Cameo, Con Funk Shun, Parliament/Funkadelic, Slave, Kool & The Gang, Dazz Band, The Commodores, The Deele, Midnight Star, Lakeside, The Time, Ready For The World. I'm a big fan of James Taylor who was the lead singer of Kool & The Gang in the early 80's. He didn't have any success when he was solo after he left the group but he has a very nice singin voice. I need to cop his solo albums. Ya'll need to get these albums downloaded on cd.

All these albums aren't available on cd at the record stores so i had a friend of mine download these albums for me on cd & i was lucky he found them cause these albums are classics. R&B music today sucks so bad cause there are too many artists singin about nothin & nobody makes funky party songs anymore like these old groups up above we named. These old groups music will last forever & u can groove off their music no matter how old it is cause it still sounds good. Dr Jazz have u heard The SOS Band's Just The Way U Like It album? That's a very good album. The title track, No One's Gonna Love U & Weekend Girl songs are on that album. I was listening to The Time's songs 777-9311, The Walk, Jungle Love, The Bird, Girl, The Stick today. I love those songs. Gigolos Get Lonely Too is another favorite song of mine by them. Ya'll need to check out Jesse Johnson's first solo album called Jesse Johnson's Revue. It came out in 85. Jesse used to be a member of The Time. His songs Be Your Man, I Want My Girl, Can U Help Me are on that album.

2. Jermaine Jackson-Let's Get Serious, Jermaine Jackson(this self titled album came out in 84 with the hits Dynamite, Do What U Do, Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin with his brother Michael, Take Good Care Of My Heart with Whitney Houston)
3. Isley Brothers-Showdown, Winner Takes All, Go For Your Guns, Go All The Way, Harvest For The World, The Heat Is On, Between The Sheets
4. Raydio-Two Places At The Same Time(Ray Parker Jr used to be with this group)
5. Earth Wind & Fire-Faces, Raise, Powerlight
6. Kool & The Gang-Ladies Night, Something Special, Emergency, In The Heart
7. The Commodores-Midnight Magic, In The Pocket(hit song Lady U Bring Me Up is on this album)
8. The Jacksons-Destiny, Triumph, Victory, The Jacksons(this self titled album came out in 76 & had the hits Enjoy Yourself & Show U The Way To Go)
9. Maze & Frankie Beverly-We Are One

I'm glad you all responded well to this. This is the most original and sampled music of all time. To the above post, yeah, Kool & the Gang was tight with James Taylor, but I like them before he joined up even though my favorite song by them is Ladies Night.

GarfieldKool i sent u a pm message. James Taylor was the man back in the day. I didn't like Kool & The Gang until he joined them cause i wasn't into the music they were doing before he joined. They were more of a jazz group before he came along. People say that Kool & The Gang were sellouts in the 80's because James made them a pop group cause of the mainstream songs they were doing like Cherish, Fresh, Joanna, Celebration, Get Down On It, Let's Go Dancing(Oooh La La La). I don't think James made them sound pop at all. He made them better as a group if u ask me. How come Parliament/Funkadelic were 2 separate groups but they had the same band members? Ohio has a lot of funk history & i'm glad cause Cleveland, Ohio is my hometown & it's a partying town. Dazz Band, Slave, Zapp/Roger Troutman, Ohio Players, Kool & The Gang, Isley Brothers, Lakeside, Howard Hewett of Shalamar are all from Ohio. Skip Martin who was the lead singer of Dazz Band is my cousin. Dazz Band are from Cleveland & they used to call themselves Kinsman Dazz in the late 70's. Kinsman is the name of a street in the hood in Cleveland.

iSAIAH tHOmas, Kool & THE Gang weren't sellouts with JT. I'll be the first to admit that. It's just that before he joined with them, that was more of what they were about. Horn-driven, Bass, funky. That was more of their roots. JT was just the final ingredient.

I'm not saying Kool & The Gang were sellouts when James joined them. I'm saying that's what people have been saying at Kool & The Gang message boards i've been reading. I love old R&B, old school jams. These are just classics especially today's standards. I like Al B. Sure!, Bobby Brown, New Edition, Earth, Wind & Fire, Freddie Jackson and those other great artists from the 70's like the Manhattans, the Stylistics, Blue Magic, the Moments and many more. These artists are off the hook.

Kool & the Gangs first few albums are insanely good!!

Nothing at all like they became later!! (I have the best of Kool and the gang on 8 track)

I cant believe they started out so beautiful!!
