Who's the Boss? - "The Way They Were"

This fan fiction goes behind the childhoods of the two clumsy lovers, Angela Bower and Tony Micelli. Angela, a 14 year old freshman in high school, is struggling to be noticed while losing her best friend. Tony, now only 12 years old in the 7th grade, is dealing with girl, sports, and popularity. This is where you find out what they really thought about each other after that first encounter at Kissing Rock. (I'll be adding pieces as I go along in different posts; Angela is first, then Tony, then Angela, etc.)


Have you ever felt like an outsider? Like everyone else is on the inside and you are standing at a window looking at them? Like if you could just get inside, your life would be a bowl of cherries? I guess it doesn't matter. I'm allergic to cherries anyway.

I remember the first time I felt like that.

"Angela," my mother called, "come down for breakfast."

"Coming," I would reply.

My mom couldn't cook, so it was always interesting to see what she had made that day. Of course, I couldn't cook either, but that's a different story.

"Angela, hurry up!" I hear my mother yell.

I trudged slowly into the kitchen. My dad kissed my forehead, then, headed out the door as I sat down. I didn't mind him leaving, he was never really home anyway.

After I ate, I kissed my mom and followed my dad's path out the door and headed for school. My best friend, Emma, was waiting for me when I got there.

"Our first day of high school! Can you believe it?" She laughed as she waited on my answer.

"I guess. What did you do over the summer?" I asked.

"I went to Europe with my parents... again. What about you?"

I normally envied Emma for being able to travel to Europe and learn about a different culture, but not this year. This year, I bet I had a better summer.

"I went to camp, again, but," I paused

"But what?" she pried.

"I kissed a boy!"

"Get out! You didn't? What was his name?" Her questions began pouring out.

"His name is Anthony and he's so cute! He spent his summer at the Y camp across the lake."

"Oh, Angela," she sighed, "you are so lucky!"

"I know."

I smiled contently and walked into my new school, which is when my life fell apart. Actually, it wasn't right then, but it might as well have been. No, it happened in the middle of the hallway after third period.

I was arranging my books in my locker, by class, of course, when everything hit the fan. Emma had just come up to me and started talking about the two girls she had met in her gym class named Suzanne and Leslie. They were known as the popular girls.

"Emma, we've only been here for three hours. How can anyone be popular yet?"

Emma gave me a look of embarrassment. "Suzanne is head of the pep squad and Leslie is the president of the debate team."

"There's a debate team?" I asked.

Emma rolled her eyes, then, quickly grabbed my arm. "Ang, don't say anything stupid. Here they come."

Sure enough, Suzanne and Leslie, followed by three other girls, came over to us. Suzanne was obviously the leader because she spoke first.

"Emma, you have been officially voted into our group as a cheerleader, but," she looked at me, "she has to go."

I looked at Emma, knowing she wouldn't leave me, but she just stared back at me. "Sorry, Angela. Popularity calls."

I can't tell you how I felt when Emma walked away. It was like a huge loneliness had taken over me. Of course, I know now she got what she deserved, but we'll get to that later.

"How was your day?" my mom asked as I walked through the door.

"Fine... just fine."

I laid down on the couch and burried my head in a pillow. It wasn't until a few minutes later that my mother came in.

"Angela, get off the couch and go eat your snack," she insisted.

I walked into the kitched slowly, thinking about what I would do at school the next day.

"I could put something in their food, or, I could just ruin their clothes while they are in gym," I began saying aloud, "or I could disqualify the pep squad from that competition they are in."

"Why don't you just join a club they are in and make them eat your dust?"

I jumped at the sound of my mother's voice. I didn't know she was standing there.

"They are on the pep squad and the debate team. I can't join those!"

"The debate team?" My mother always questioned things that involved the popular kids and braniacs. "Don't they spend their time with boys?"

"They have brains and beauty. They can do both."

"Well, you can at least manage the brain part. And if those girls are in the debate society or whatever, you should be too."

"Really?" It was unlike my mom to be nice to me, although, I know she loves me.

"Really... it'll keep you busy."

She patted my knee with a look in her eyes. I knew why she wanted me to stay busy, but I didn't care. I was going to do it. I was going to join the debate team.
