Reality Show
In the era of reality TV, a group of producers and writers from two rival award-winning sitcoms find themselves out of a job when their shows are cancelled. The only way for them to survive is to join forces and jump on the reality show bandwagon. Together, they try to create a low-budget reality show. Characters Derek Lance: The 30-something former producer of Chums (a trendy sitcom about 8 friends), winner of 5 Emmy awards. At heart he's a conservative yuppie, yet he tries to be hip, alternative and politically correct (with little success). Vivian Crow: The 40-year-old former producer of Benton (the high brow sitcom about a philosophy professor and his brother), winner of 9 Emmy awards. A Harvard graduate intellectual known for her difficult temper, she hates having to be a part of reality TV. In fact, she is disgusted by every aspect of reality TV save for one: the money. However, she is a materialist in denial. Gabe Strom: Derek's half-brother who started writing for Chums during its last seasons (when the show was at its worst). His love of trashy humor drew in more viewers for the show but disgusted the critics. Albert Benton: The wise old veteran writer and creator of Benton; winner of 17 Emmy awards. A self-made man of principle known for his ego and ambiguous insults. Pam Sanchez: Former set designer for Chums and a closeted reality TV junkie. Derek keeps her on because he feels the need to have a token Hispanic employee. Kim: The awkward camera man who has no sense of humor and takes everything literally. He is Derek's token Asian guy. Episode 001 coming soon. |

001 "Keeping It Real"
Vivian, Albert, Derek, Gabe and Pam bump into each other at the last Emmy award ceremony they'll attend in a long time. Unsurprisingly, neither show wins an award. They hang around the place after everybody else has gone, lamenting the cancellation of their shows. It's then that Derek and Gabe cook up a plan to start their own reality TV show. Feeling sorry for their former sitcom rivals, Derek asks if Albert and Vivian want to join in on the action. Vivian laughs in his face but later accepts the offer once she realizes how much money she can make. Of course, she tries to disguise her true motive by calling this a challenge, an opportunity to make TV's first quality reality show. She decides that this show will have excellent writing - and for that, she needs Albert. But he's not easy to convince. Not only does he hate reality TV, but he wants to retire. He caves in once Vivian and Derek stroke his ego and give him total creative control. 002 "The Lie That Tells the Truth" Albert's idea for a philosophy-themed reality show becomes a huge source of controversy. Derek thinks it's far too intelligent- not to mention boring - for the average viewer. Vivian tries to defend Benton, and ends up insulting Derek and all those Chums fans. Derek finally gives in and he and Vivian call their friends in the business. However, none of the main networks like Benton's idea. The show seems doomed from the start, and the group is on the verge of giving up. Meanwhile, Gabe and Pam decide to hunt down a network on their own. They finally get an offer from a cable channel, but only after a few lies and some heavy revising of Benton's original idea. 003 "The Pilot" ... |

003 "The Pilot"
Vivian is still coming to terms with the fact that she will be working for a cable network. Her temper explodes once she finds out the network expects them to start shooting in a week. Derek takes it upon himself to hire a technical staff. He barely looks at the applicants resumes and ends up hiring a young Korean called Kim to be in charge of the cameras. Everybody ridicules his political correctness once they find out Kim has hardly any experience at all. Meanwhile, Gabe and Pam are out looking for participants for their show. With the tight schedule, they end up recruiting a bunch of homeless people. The shooting of the pilot turns into a bloodbath once Albert Benton discovers his original idea has been modified. In the end, they manage to come to an agreement and shoot the first episode of their reality show, with Derek jumping in at the last minute to play the host. |

They were Friends and Frasier. I'd be more inclined to continue this if I were getting paid. |
