Default Cheers Bibliography

Today I went to the library to see if they had anything on Cheers. They didn't. They only had a few books about sitcoms. The only one that interested me was one about women in sitcoms, but it's clearly a sucky book because they hardly mention Diane and Lilith. They have a few sentences about them and that's it. Losers.

I'm currently looking up journal articles about the show.

If anybody knows of other books or articles about Cheers, post the bibliographic information and a summary of what it's about.

Found some cool stuff so far, but I can't find the full article for some of them.

1)
Author: Helen Gurley Brown
Title: "How to out-fox TV's new breed of macho men."
Source: TV Guide v34, p10, August 2, 1986.
Note: this one is about Diane Chambers and Maddie from Moonlighting.

2)
Title: "Diane or Rebecca? No one is neutral in the great debate."
Source: People Weekly, v3 n20 p76, May 23, 1993.
Note: Jackie Collins is a Rebecca fan.
**I actually have this article if anybody wants to read it.

3)
Author: Randall Fallows
Title: "The Enneagram of Cheers: Where Everybody Knows Your Numbers."
Source: Journal of Popular Culture fall 2002, v34, issue 2, p169.
Note: The author analyzes the characters' personalities.
**I have this one too.

4)
Author: Heather L. Hindley
Title:"The Naturalization of Beer in Cheers."
Source: Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media summer 1995, v39 n3 p350-359.

Ok well, um, I haven't checked it out for a while, but my uni library has the official cheers episode guide, with like, really long profiles for each character and each actor. If anyone wants anything specific from it, I guess I could type it up.

I can PM it to somebody...I don't want to get involved in this: "Copyright of Journal of Popular Culture is the property of Blackwell Publishing Limited and its content may not be copied or e-mailed to multiple sites or posted to a listserv without the copyright holder`s express written permission. However, users may print, download, or e-mail articles for individual use."

I highly recommend it.

Default Another Cheers Book...

Another good Cheers book is Classic Sitcoms (Second Edition) by Vince Waldron. It's basically an in-depth episode guide, but it also includes Cheers' emmy wins for all 11 seasons. Cheers is one of 10 sitcoms which are featured in the book (I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore Show, M*A*S*H*, and Taxi are a few others.) It can be found online at www.classicsitcoms.com ...I think that's the address, I'm not sure!

Articles are nice and fun.... but they sure as hell aren't an episode of The Tortelli's.

Not that I like to pick favorites or anything.

But you're right. Nobody can beat Brian Damage.
(But if I beat you hard enough, maybe you'll get Brain Damage.)

I found another Cheers related article. It's not only about Cheers but that's all I will post. If you want to read the rest, PM me.

"10 Ways to Stack up Sitcom Success"
April 11, 2003, USA Today
By: I don't know-I can't find the name!

Create Great Characters: Cheers
(NBC, 1982-93; highest rank, No. 1)

American sitcoms tend to be character-driven rather than plot driven, and none more so than Cheers. Even people who can't remember the precise details of any episode can probably tell you something about Sam, Diane, Carla, Coach, Norm, and Cliff. They weren't just a collection of comic types hanging out in a bar. They were clearly defined individuals who called to mind people most of us either knew or wanted to know. And they were played by a great ste of actors who were able to show us their characters' humanity without losing any humor.

Cheers also let us get to know its characters before it asked us to invest in their romantic relationships. Yes, we knew Sam and Diane would spark from the start. That's how expertly the characters were played and written. But they didn't know it until later, and that delay - not just keeping them apart, but keeping them in the dark - made all the difference.

Great characters don't neccessarily have to be likable, though considering how much time we're asked to spend with them, being likable does increase a show's chance of survival. But they do have to be memorable, or why should we both to return?
