Question Has anybody remembered "Mary Poppins"?

I watched the movie this morning on my VHS tape and it was an excellent. "Mary Poppins" was released 40 years ago, today. Disney's musical legacy lives again. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were great actors in the film. The songs "Chim Chim Cher-ee", "A Spoonful of Sugar", "Jolly Holiday", "Step in Time" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" were excellent songs from the film. The movie was great 40 years ago, and it was an enormous box office success. I hope that the next 40 years will be a better one. Happy 40th anniversary, "Mary Poppins".

"Mary Poppins" will be re-released in a 2-disc special edition DVD in December, featuring commentary by Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews!

Ditto! (Well, except for the kids part! ) It's going at the top of my Christmas list. I listen to the soundtrack all the time.

I have three albums on vinyl, the soundtrack album, the Disneyland spoken word album with songs from the movie, and the other album "10 Songs from 'Mary Poppins'" with Bill Lee and Marni Nixon.

The cover art looks good. I'm also looking forward to the release. It will definitely be at the top of my Christmas list. My son and I watched it a couple of weeks ago. He loved it, especially since he likes anything having to do with music.

I can't wait for the DVD!! I haven't seen the movie in a few years, and I held off on buying the first DVD release, but now I'm glad I did because this 2-disc version sounds so great! I love all the songs from this movie too and really do need to buy the CD. I've always thought that Dick Van Dyke was every bit as important to this movie as Julie Andrews, and he should have at least been nominated for an oscar too! One of my favorite movies!!

Ooh I just saw it last night, it was on tv here, and I get to see it again in three weeks' time for a film class I do

I'll always be defending Dick van Dyke's "lamentable" accent too...it wasn't that bad!! OK it was. But when I was 4 it was cool, and I grew up with it, so I can't imagine it any different. I'm used to it

Found it funny as well, how they made him up to look old as Dawes sr, he looks older then all made up than he does now really

From Army Archerd's column in Variety on December 1, 2004:

"I can't do it, I'm pregnant." That was Julie Andrews' reply to Walt Disney when he went backstage after seeing her in "Camelot" in 1961 and offered the unknown (to movies) Andrews the lead in "Mary Poppins." Disney did indeed wait to do the film with her -- and Dick Van Dyke and, as the saying goes, the rest was history. But when I talked with Julie and Dick on Tuesday I wondered howcum during these 40 years they never did another movie together? "No one asked us. And more's the pity, we're very fond of each other," Julie admits. They loved filming together five days on the revived sets of Tony Walton for "Mary Poppins" (found on the Disney lot) for the bonus footage found in the 40th anni DVD "Mary Poppins" edition. At 79 and 69 respectively, Dick and Julie are still available to duo despite having full plates and offers. She heads out to 30-40 cities directing "The Boy Friend," bowing first at the Goodspeed. She's talking "The Princess Diaries 3" and "Shrek 3." She's in the middle of writing another children's book -- and her bio for Hyperion. She and daughter Emma are readying a live/animated series on "Dumpy the Dump Truck" with Sesame Street partnered at PBS. Dick is doing his first animated feature, "Curious George," with Wes Farrell for Ron Howard. Also, the new "Batman" animated series playing the Commissioner to Adam West's "Batman." He and son Barry are readying to do four shows on Hallmark's wheel of family shows. And on an unpublicized key, Dick is active at the L.A. Mission. We also reminisced about the Oscars received (five) for "Mary Poppins" and those ignored. Julie won, Dick wasn't nominated. "My Fair Lady" won for picture, Rex Harrison for actor while Audrey Hepburn, played the role Julie made famous on stage, wasn't nominated. Julie mourned the fact there's no recording of her "My Fair Lady" on B'way. She never did it again. "But look what I got in return," she says philosophically, "Mary Poppins."

From the Disney press release:

To celebrate the 40th anniversary and the dazzling restoration of one of the most beloved films of all time, MARY POPPINS, Buena Vista Home Entertainment recreated the glamour and excitement of the original MARY POPPINS 1964 premiere on Hollywood Blvd. The gala re-premiere and party launched the all-new Special 40th Anniversary Edition 2-disc DVD (available on December 14).

On November 30, 2004, the film's stars Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, Glynis Johns and Karen Dotrice were reunited with filmmakers including co-composer Richard M. Sherman.

Hundreds of attendees of the black-tie event were on hand for the re-premiere and DVD launch, including Rose Marie from The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Arrivals were met by a sea of fans, a huge red carpet, original backdrops from the film's set, chalk pavement pictures and even live penguins.

"Practically Perfect in Every Way," the new MARY POPPINS 40th Anniversary Edition 2-disc DVD features both a remastered picture and remixed sound with the Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix. This special edition includes an all-new animated short hosted by Julie Andrews and starring the voice talent of Sarah Ferguson, Tracy Ullman and David Ogden Stiers. Created exclusively for the DVD, the short is based on an original MARY POPPINS story by P.L. Travers, "The Cat That Looked At A King." The DVD also includes a reunion with Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and co-composer Richard Sherman as they reminisce about making the film and the music that was such a special part of its success. As well, the MARY POPPINS 40th Anniversary Edition also contains a new rendition of the never-before-heard deleted song 'Chimpanzoo;' a new, definitive behind-the-scenes 'making of' feature with never-before-released footage and new interviews; an all-new set-top game, "I Love To Laugh;" a Disney Song Selection track that shows the words to your favorite songs on screen; a newly recorded audio commentary with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke; and much, much more.

Wow, how cool. I was nine when Mary Poppins came out. My mother took me to see it and I remember dancing with joy all the way home after the viewing. I have a picture of me somewhere holding the Mary Poppins book I got for Christmas that year! I'll have to see if I can track it down.

Here is another neat article about the 40th anniversary:

'Poppins' Still Perfect at 40

In 1964 the entire cast of the Dick Van Dyke Show came to the premiere of Mary Poppins. Neat!

What a sweet article! I'm sorry the little boy died so young, though, I didn't know that! He was a charmer.

I agree with DVD's assessment of what happened to Mary and Burt...Burt had a bit of magic to him, too, didn't he...(and, psst...I liked his cockney accent a LOT!).
