Thumbs up It's Been 40 Years Since "Mary Poppins" Was Released

I know that movie. "Mary Poppins" is one of my all-time favorites of the Disney films. The movie was released 40 years ago, today. I have the soundtrack on vinyl as well as the Disneyland version of the soundtrack album of the same name featuring unknown cast like Marni Nixon and Bill Lee. The original soundtrack version had Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews on the other album. I also have the Disneyland spoken word LP of the same name in storybook form with songs in it and it comes with a 11-page full color booklet. All three of these records are collector's items. I love all the songs from the film. "Chim Chim Cher-ee", "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", "Step in Time", "Feed the Birds" and of course "Let's Go Fly a Kite". That movie is still a favorite of my generation. It happened about 40 years ago, today.

Since this is the 40th anniversary of "Mary Poppins", this is the picture of Disneyland's spoken word LP called "Mary Poppins". It has 11-pages in it. I have that one on vinyl.

Mary Poppins is a great film. I used to watch it all the time when I was young, and still watch it when it's on during the holidays. One of my fave songs (except for Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious- I love saying that word) was "Jolly Holiday" and I also liked that Sister Suffragettes song near the start of the film, as well as Spoonful of Sugar- in fact, all the songs are great. I thought the ending was sad though. I rank it up there with The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as films that you cold watch again and again!

Something bothers me though- i searched this actress on imdb.com called Mary Wickes (she's Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act) and one of her guest appearance listings was for an old anthology series called "Studio One". It lists her as playing 'Mary Poppins' in an episode called 'Mary Poppins'. I'm wondering if the person who submitted that entry was either lying or mistaken- or if Mary Wickes first played Mary Poppins in an hour long episode of this tv show- then maybe Walt Disney saw it??

Thumbs up

I was a little girl when Mary Poppins came out. I just loved it, and still know the songs by heart. It's a true classic.

The DVD sounds interesting- I think there's a deleted scene (Dinsey movies all seem to have a deleted musical number- it's almost as though they planned on dvd being invented) and Julie Andrews said something about the animation being reworked.
