Default Was Grady the reason that the show could not maintain the number 1 spot for the

1973-74 season? I read in a 1973 Jet magazine that Sanford and Son had taken over the number one spot from All in the Family and was number one for most of that season but we all know what happened in Feb of 1974. Redd left and the show had Grady step in as a replacement for Fred. I don;t know about anyone else, but IMO, Sanford and Son without Redd for the remaining 6 episodes of the 73-74 season was not going to compete with All in the Family. So the disappearance of Redd Foxx can be the reason the show could not be #1 in the country.

I would assume that people weren't as aware back then as to what was happening with actors and their contracts.

I bet people tuned in for the first Grady episode, said, "what the ?" and either found out Redd Foxx was out or tuned in one more week before getting ticked off and tuning out.

So, yes I believe Redd Foxx leaving made S&S lose the #1 spot.

yes I would have to agree with that
there were only one or two episodes with grady that were even worth watching
I feel that was the reason SS lost the #1 rating

But you know I could be wrong

but I don't think so

Didn't Sanford finish at #3 that year behind AITF and the Waltons? Also, Good Times started around this time and competed directly with Sanford I think.

Yep, S&S finished number 3 after the 73-74 season. Grady caused S&S to drop to number 3 instead of #2-LOL But there was no competition from Good Times even though both shows aired on friday night because S&S came on at 8pm and GT aired at 8:30pm

I think the reason why Sanford and Son dropped from the #2 position to #3 was the absence of Redd Foxx

Yep, the absence of Fred defintley caused S&S to fall below the Waltons.

Sanford and Son was just BORING in my opinion without the show's star "Redd Foxx"...
